Aunty Adele 

HANNAH’S POV: 

He nodded slowly. Then he said, “Is everything okay?” 

“Yes,” I said, crouching down to his level. “I need to go and see Aunty Adele about something important. But I am. going to call you every night and your grandmother is going to be here the whole time and Dad is coming with me so you have nothing to worry about.” 

He looked at me with those eyes of his that always seemed to be measuring the truth of what I was saying against what he already suspected. Then he said, “Okay,” and hugged me. 

Amelia required significantly less reassurance because Amelia had processed the entire situation in about four seconds and had already moved on to asking her grandmother what was in the second tote bag. 

“Baking things,” Mrs. Martinez said. 

Amelia looked at her with enormous eyes. “We are making cake?” 

“We are making three things and cake is one of them,” Mrs. Martinez said with the air of someone who had done this before and knew exactly what she was doing. 

Amelia grabbed her grandmother’s hand and pulled her in the direction of the kitchen and I heard her say, very seriously, “I should warn you that Andrew is not very good at measuring but he thinks he is” and Andrew said loudly from behind them “That is completely untrue” and the kitchen door swung shut on the argument. 

Elijah appeared beside me with the bags. “Ready?” 

I took one more second listening to the sounds of the house, my children and their grandmother and the clatter of baking tins and the ongoing measuring debate, and then I nodded. 

“Ready,” I said. 

Amelia’s voice floated out from the kitchen just before the front door closed. 

“Andrew, you cannot put that much butter in, that is genuinely too much butter.” 

“Grandma said a generous amount.” 

“A generous amount does not mean the entire block, Andrew, there are limits.” 

“Grandma, was that a generous amount?”
