A Legacy That Breathes
HANNAH’S POV:
I laughed. “That sounds exactly right.”
“She did not even yell at me,” he said. “I think that was worse. She was just so calm and so focused and she knew. exactly what she was doing and I was just standing there being completely useless.”
“You were there,” I said. “That is not useless.”
“I held her hand,” he said. “She told me I was holding it too tight and she took her hand back.” A pause. “I stood next to her and watched and I could not believe what I was watching.”
I could hear the love in his voice.
“What is her name?” I asked.
There was a pause that was about one second longer than it needed to be.
“We are sending out the announcement later today,” he said. “Cherry wants to do it properly with the photograph.
“Jacob,” I said.
“Later today,” he said firmly, in the voice of a man who had been given a very clear instruction and was choosing not to improvise around it.
“Fine,” I said. “Give Cherry my love. Tell her she is extraordinary.”
“She already knows,” he said. “But I will tell her.”
The announcement came through at two in the afternoon.
A photograph of Cherry in the hospital bed holding a very small, very pink, completely perfect baby girl. Cherry looked radiant in the way that people look when they have done something enormous and their body has not caught up with the rest of them yet. The baby was wearing a small yellow hat that was slightly too big for her and which I found almost unbearably sweet.
I read the caption.
Cherry and Jacob are overjoyed to welcome their daughter. She was born early but arrived with everything she needed. She weighed six pounds two ounces and she has her father’s ears and her mother’s absolute refusal to be hurried. Her name is Mirada Cherry Daniel.
I read it again.
