The Women in Orange 

MARY’S POV: 

“Rights.” She laughed again, and the others joined in. “You don’t have rights in here, sweetheart. You have us. And we haven’t decided what to do with you yet.” 

My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my temples, in my throat, in the tips of my fingers. But I didn’t move. I didn’t look away. I had learned, years ago, that animals could smell fear. And these women, they were animals. 

“I’m not here to cause trouble,” I said. “I just want to sit quietly until my lawyer arrives.” 

“Your lawyer.” The woman with braids slid off the bench and walked toward me, her hips swaying in a way that felt performative, mocking. “Listen to her. She thinks she’s getting out of here.” 

“The cops put you in here with us for a reason,” the tall one said. She was close enough now that I could smell her, cigarettes and sweat and something sour underneath. “Someone wanted you here. Someone paid for you to be here.” 

I shook my head. “That’s not-” 

“You think this is an accident?” She gestured at the cell, at the four of them, at the flickering light overhead. “You think we just happened to be here at the same time? Lol nah, sweetheart. Someone made a call. Someone pulled some strings. And now you’re here, with us, and we’re supposed to make sure you don’t forget it.” 

My thoughts went back to Alistair again. About the way he had spoken to the police. About the authority in his voice, the ease with which he had told them what to do. 

He couldn’t have. He wouldn’t have. 

But the doubt was already there, spreading through my chest like cracks in ice. 

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said. 

The tall one smiled and it was not a kind smile. 

“Sure you don’t.” 

They didn’t touch me at first.
