Possession
3RD POV:
He chuckled bitterly. “Let them whisper. They’ll get bored eventually. And weren’t you just calling her out on her mode of dressing at the fashion show?”
“This isn’t a joke!” His mother’s hand smacked against the table, startling Lena who lingered by the door.” You’re over thirty-two. Your father had already built half this empire at your age and secured his family’s name. You think prestige comes from money alone? It comes from appearances, from legacy. From heirs.”
Elijah’s expression hardened. “If you came here to tell me to get Janet pregnant as well, you’ve wasted both our times.”
His mother’s lips thinned. “You have no respect.
“No, I have no interest,” he corrected coldly. “Janet is your choice, not mine. I won’t live my life trying to appease your obsession with perfection. I have no love for her and like I told you, dad and her parents, I’m still legally married so please.”
For a moment, silence hung between them, thick with unspoken history. Then she smoothed her jacket, collected her purse, and said in clipped tones, “You’ll regret this, Elijah. Mark my words.” She turned on her heel and swept out, leaving a trace of her scent and bitterness behind her.
He exhaled heavily, sinking into his chair. The encounter left his head pounding, but not because of guilt but because of the suffocating inevitability of it all. His mother would never stop. Janet would never stop. The whole world seemed to expect him to do something he didn’t want to do and it was exhausting.
I can never just be at peace for just one day, can I? He let out a deep sigh and he soon got a message from Janet reminding of the dinner tonight.
By evening, after two more strained meetings and a mountain of documents signed without really reading them, his phone buzzed.
Jacob was calling.
“What’s up? You’re still up for tonight right?” Jacob’s voice was warm, grounding.
“Yes, Janet cannot wait to host you two. At least she’s even doing something for once.” Elijah mumbled the last part to himself, loosening his tie, staring at the skyline outside his office window.
“Alright. But before that-check the link I just sent you.” Jacob said.
Something in Jacob’s tone made Elijah frown. He unlocked his phone, tapped the link, and froze.
On the screen was Hannah.
Even disguised by dark shades, there was no mistaking her her walk, her poise, the way she carried herself. Next to her was Lucas, his ever-present grin splitting across his face. But Elijah’s attention tunneled past him, zeroing in on the two children clutching Hannah’s hands.
A boy and a girl. Twins.
His breath caught in his throat. His grip on the phone turned white-knuckled.
“That’s Hannah right?” Jacob asked just before Elijah was about to speak.
