Mercy for Vesper
ALISTAIR’S POV:
Helen blinked. “Her parents, sir?”
“Her parents. They live in… somewhere, I don’t really remember anymore. Look it up.
She hesitated, her fingers hovering over her tablet: “And what should I tell them about the charges?”
“Tell them the truth. She was arrested for assault. She’s been behaving erratically. They need to come and take responsibility for her.”
Helen nodded slowly, making a note on her tablet. “I’ll make the calls right away.”
She turned to leave, but before she could reach the door, another voice stopped her.
“There’s no need to do that.”
I looked up.
Vesper rose from the couch and walked toward my desk, her bare feet silent on the marble floor. After she had called me she had come to my office a few minutes later. And right now she had taken off her heels earlier, complaining that they hurt her feet. She looked soft and worried and beautiful, the way she always looked when she was concerned about someone.
“Vesper,” I said. “You don’t need to involve yourself in this.”
“I heard what you said to the officer. And what you just told your secretary.” She stopped beside my desk and placed her hand on my arm. Her fingers were warm. Gentle. “Please don’t call her parents. I don’t want to damage her relationship with her family.”
“You’re not damaging anything. She did that herself.”
“Alistair.” She looked up at me, her eyes wide and earnest. “You’re already helping me by handling this. That’s more than enough. Maybe one night in the cell will be enough for her to calm down. She doesn’t need her parents dragged into it. She doesn’t need the humiliation.”
I looked at her.
At her eyes, wide and earnest. At her mouth, soft and concerned. At the way she was looking at me, like I was someone worth looking up at.
Even as the victim, even as the woman Mary had been targeting, she was still considering Mary’s feelings.
Few people could be so understanding.
