The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 365

The Game Vesper Played

MARY’S POV:

“Thank you,” I said. “For today. For coming. For… everything.”

He shrugged. “It was nothing.”

“It wasn’t nothing. You made her happy. That’s not nothing.”

He was quiet for a moment. Then he said, “She’s a great kid. You’ve done a good job with her.”

I didn’t know what to say to that. So I said nothing.

We stood there in the silence, the cold air between us, the last of the sunlight fading from the sky. He was about to say something, I could see it in the way his mouth opened, the way his eyes searched mine.

Then I heard it.

The sound of an engine. Loud, aggressive, too fast for the narrow street.

I turned.

A car was speeding toward us, headlights cutting through the fading light. It swerved, tires screeching against the asphalt, and came to a stop in front of my house.

My heart dropped as Vesper got out.

She was carrying a pile of Chanel shopping bags, the type of luxury that came with a breathtaking price. Her dark hair was loose around her shoulders, her makeup perfect, her lips curved into a small smile.

She was wearing a men’s shirt which I recognized it almost immediately.

It was Alistair’s. The pale blue one, the one I had bought him for our sixth anniversary. The one he had been wearing the morning he came home from the office, the morning he had lied to me about where he had been.

The shirt was untucked, the sleeves rolled up, the top buttons undone. It hung loosely on her frame, too big, too familiar. It was obvious what had happened between them.
