The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 386

The Cold Truth

MARY’S POV:

She then turned toward the bed, gesturing toward the pillows with an open palm.

“This young woman got hurt while she was helping me out earlier today,” Beatrice explained, her tone completely casual. “The doctor said she will probably have to stay off her feet and take some time away from work. I felt terrible about it and wanted to make sure she was taken care of. Since I know she works

over at Alistair’s firm, I called him and asked him to drop by.”

Her voice was light and cheerful, as though she had no clue about the storm raging around us. She spoke as if Vesper were merely a helpful stranger who deserved a polite visit from the company boss.

I turned my head slowly to look at Vesper.

She was propped up against three big pillows, her dark hair falling loosely over her shoulders, looking small and pale against the white sheets. Her right ankle was wrapped in thick white bandages. She looked helpless and weak, the exact image of a woman who needed a man to step in and protect her.

It was an act I had seen before. I had seen her pull the exact same routine in my own driveway, stumbling backward onto the gravel and crying out in pain just as Alistair walked out the door. I had seen it in the photos and the videos, watching the way she managed to turn my husband against me with nothing more than a soft sigh and a pitiful look.

A cold, fake smile spread across my face.

“Didn’t you injure that exact same ankle last time too, Vesper?” I asked, keeping my voice smooth and conversational. “Does it just pop out of place whenever you need it to? Alistair, do you think you need to step in and fix it for her again… just like you did back then?”

My words hung in the air like a heavy weight.

I watched the immediate reaction ripple across the room. Beatrice’s hands froze in place. Her forehead creased as her eyes darted between me and the bed. Beside me, Alistair went completely rigid, his jaw snapping shut.

Beatrice looked at me, then at Vesper, clearly confused. “Wait, do you two already know each other?”

Vesper’s eyes flickered for a fraction of a second. It was brief, but I caught it, a flash of pure annoyance behind her soft eyes. Then, just as quickly, she forced her face back into that weak, helpless expression she always used.

“Yes,” Vesper said in a quiet, fragile voice, resting two fingers against her temple as if she had a sudden migraine. “Mary has… a few misunderstandings about me. But it is not her fault, really…”

Her voice trailed off nicely, and she let her body sway to the side as if she were about to faint from the sheer stress of the moment. It was a incredible performance.

Alistair was at her bedside before she even finished swaying.

He moved so fast he practically pushed past me. One second he was standing by my side, and the next he was leaning over Vesper’s bed, placing his hands on her shoulders to steady her. His touch was gentle and careful, showing a level of comfort that only comes from long practice.

He reached down to adjust the pillow behind her head, his fingers brushing against her dark hair. He guided her arm gently as he helped her lay back down against the sheets, his hands staying on her a few seconds longer than necessary. He pulled the hospital blanket up over her chest, smoothing down the edges with total concentration.

“Do not worry about it,” he told her in a low, quiet voice. “I will handle everything.”

I stood there and watched the entire thing unfold.
