The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 389

No More Sympathy

MARY’S POV:

The heavy leather handbag struck Alistair directly across his left shoulder with a deep thwack, making a loud sound that seemed to ring against the hard hospital walls for several seconds. He stumbled back a few quick paces, his arms going wide to catch his balance, his mouth hanging half open in total disbelief. His hand came right up to rub the sore spot on his shoulder where the bag had landed, and his expression quickly changed from complete surprise to something much darker and more angry. The blow had landed hard enough to leave a deep bruise on his skin through his shirt, and I was sure it was going to hurt for days. Beatrice had never been a weak woman, and when she got truly angry about something, she never held back her strength.

His short dark hair was messed up from the movement, with a few strands falling across his forehead. He looked completely unraveled, his sharp clothes wrinkled, and the calm control he liked to show the world was suddenly tearing apart at the seams. I could tell his mind was racing behind his eyes, trying to figure out how to stop his mother from hitting him again and how to regain control of the whole terrible situation.

“Please do not hit Alistair,” Vesper said suddenly, her voice shaking violently from the bed. Deep tears were running down her pale cheeks, leaving wet streaks on her skin. “It is not his fault at all. None of this mess is his fault.”

She tried desperately to sit up higher against her pillows, her movements wild and clumsy. Her hands pressed hard into the mattress, her arms shaking from the effort, her face turning red with concern. She was trying so hard to look like she was stepping in to protect Alistair from his own mother’s rage, leaning her upper body forward as if she could physically get between them. The loose collar of her hospital gown slid off one shoulder, showing her collarbone.

She moved so fast and dramatically that she nearly slipped right off the narrow mattress. Her body wobbled to the side, her hands scrambling to grab the bedsheets, and her wrapped ankle hit the metal frame beneath the blanket. It was a complete show, planned out down to the last second. It was the exact same kind of delicate performance that had earned her so much sympathy over the years and won over a man who should have known much better. It was the exact act that had torn my marriage to

pieces.

Alistair fell for it immediately, just like he always did.

His eyes softened right away, the sharp line of his jaw relaxed, and his body leaned toward her without him even realizing it. He reached out with one long arm and took hold of her small hand, wrapping his fingers tightly around hers to keep her from falling. The way he held her was soft and familiar, showing a level of comfort that only comes from months of practice. I stood there and watched his thumb move back and forth over the back of her skin, making small circles in the exact same way he used to touch my hand a long time ago.

A second later, his mother’s heavy handbag swung through the air and hit him again.

This time, the heavy leather struck him hard across the upper arm, making him flinch and pull back with

a sharp gasp. He let go of Vesper’s fingers instantly, his body twisting away from the blow while a deep scowl covered his face. He looked like an animal trapped in a tight corner, completely out of lies and unsure of what to say next. His right hand went up to rub his arm where the bag had hit him, his skin already turning red under his sleeve.

“Stop it right now!” he snapped at his mother, keeping his voice low and hard through his teeth. “We are in a public building!”
