The Light Ahead
MARY’S POV
+15 Bonus
I stood up and spoke quietly with the nanny near the door for a few minutes, giving her detailed instructions for the next few hours or days to make sure everything went smoothly. I showed her where the extra groceries were stored in the pantry, pointed out the list of emergency phone numbers taped to the side of the refrigerator, and showed her where Elowen’s favorite toys were kept in the closet. I made completely sure she knew how to reach me on my mobile phone at any hour of the night, how to contact the preschool down the street, and what to do if any kind of emergency came up while I was away.
Once everything was taken care of, I walked down the hall to my master bedroom and shut the heavy door behind me.
I sat down on the cold edge of the mattress, pulled my mobile phone out of my coat pocket, and typed out a quick text message to Hotch.
I desperately need your help right now. I managed to get real evidence tonight. Can you please take on my divorce case?
The reply came back to my screen less than ten seconds later.
Call my personal cell phone right now.
I tapped his number immediately, and he answered the call before the very first ring even finished.
“Mary,” he said, his deep voice sounding full of genuine concern for me. “What on earth is happening over there? Are you safe?”
“I am completely fine,” I told him, taking a deep breath to steady my shaky voice. “But I really need to sit down and talk with you. I have collected hard proof tonight, voice recordings, clear pictures, and official documents proving every single thing he has been doing behind my back. I desperately need a strong lawyer who is not going to back down when Alistair tries to intimidate them.”
He stayed completely silent on the other end of the line for a few long seconds. Then he spoke up, his tone heavy with regret. “I had no idea things had gotten this terrible for you at home, Mary Why on earth did you not pick up the phone and tell me about this months ago?”
“Because I was completely embarrassed,” I admitted in a quiet voice, looking down at my hands Because I foolishly thought I could fix my marriage if I just stayed quiet. Because I thought if I worked hard enough and stayed patient, he would eventually change back into the man I married”
I heard him pull in a long, heavy breath through his nose. “You do not ever have to make excuses or explain yourself to me, Mary. I am standing right here with you now, and I am going to help you get through every single step of this mess. You are not going to have to fight this battle alone anymore You never should have had to.”
I felt a tight, painful knot form right in the back of my throat. “Thank you so much, Hotch I honestly do not know what I would have done tonight without you.”
