The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 404

A Violent Impact

MARY’S POV:

I stood frozen in total shock as the nightmare unfolded right before my eyes.

Everything happened far too quickly, breaking the stillness of the night with violent speed. Just one brief second ago, Hotch had been standing right beside his dark sedan, his tired face lit up by the warm glow of the porch light, his hand raised in a gentle, reassuring wave. The tall streetlamps cast long, thin shadows across the wet pavement, highlighting the weary lines around his eyes. He had driven all the way across the city in the middle of the night just to help me, serving as my single lifeline in the middle of this awful disaster.

The very next second, a silver vehicle came speeding around the corner out of nowhere and slammed straight into the side of his car with a sickening crunch of twisting metal and shattering glass, the awful noise echoing through the quiet neighborhood streets like a cannon blast.

Time seemed to grind to a complete halt right in front of me.

I watched in total horror as the blinding headlights of the second car cut through the dark night, harsh and furious. I watched the violent force of the crash shudder through both vehicles, the thick steel doors crumpling inward like thin paper, and the side windows exploding outward in a heavy shower of glittery glass shards. I watched Hotch’s body get thrown backward through the air from the force of the hit, his arms splayed out uselessly, until his head struck the hard concrete curb with a dull, sickening thud that I knew would haunt my dark dreams for the rest of my life.

His body hit the pavement awkwardly, falling completely still and silent on the cold asphalt.

For several long seconds, I could not force my legs to move a single inch.

My whole world had completely stopped spinning. The cold air felt frozen deep inside my lungs, refusing to come out. The terrifying sound of the metal crushing together kept repeating over and over inside my head, a horrible loop of pain that I could not escape. The heavy smell of spilled gasoline, hot rubber, and burning metal filled my nose, thick and choking. The freezing night air bit hard against my face, but my body was too numb to even feel it.

Then, my legs finally reacted, and I was running as fast as I could.

My feet carried me frantically across the wide driveway, my bare soles slapping hard against the cold concrete with every single step. I did not feel the freezing temperature of the ground. I did not feel the tiny, sharp stones of the gravel driveway digging deep into my skin. I did not care about a single thing except the desperate, overwhelming need to get to his side. The dark houses on either side of the street blurred into dark shapes around me, the yellow streetlamps stretching into long streaks of gold light.

“Hotch!” I screamed into the dark, my voice cracking from raw panic.

I dropped heavily to my knees right beside his motionless body on the street, my trembling hands reaching out to touch his pale face. His skin felt freezing cold under my palms, far too cold for a living person, his dark eyes were completely shut, and his lips were parted slightly. A thick line of dark red

blood was slowly trickling out from beneath his messy hair near his forehead, tracing a path down his temple and pooling onto the pavement. His chest was barely rising and falling, his breathing shallow, uneven, and ragged as if every single breath was a massive struggle for his body.

He was completely unconscious.
