Brownies and Almosts
3RD POV:
“Yes, promise you are not cry?” Andrew added and Hannah chuckled and sniffled raising up her pinky and the three of them interlocked the fingers and she kissed it.
“I promise.” They all smiled and she watched as they walk off and Elijah only let out a breath and waved at them which they ignored.
Watching them walk into that pristine building with confident steps made something swell in her chest. Pride, yes but also fear.
They are growing up so fast. She muttered and heard as Elijah hummed and she glanced at him.
Staring at him with his glistening felt weird to her and it made her shiver because this fragile, peaceful life felt borrowed. Like a dream she’d wake up from. 1
The day passed in a blur of meetings and design revisions. At one point, Kara reminded her that she hadn’t eaten lunch yet, and Hannah only smiled faintly. Her mind wasn’t on fabric lines or client emails; it kept drifting to the morning to the small smile on Andrew’s face, to the light in Amelia’s eyes and she couldn’t wait to see them later and hear how their day went.
When the day ended, she picked them up from school herself, despite the driver’s insistence. They ran toward her the moment they spotted her car, the kind of reunion that made the other parents smile.
“Mommy! You won’t believe this,” Amelia said breathlessly as she climbed into the backseat. “They have a mini petting zoo at school! And a music room! I saw violins and I think I’m going to play!”
My eyes went wide in surprise and my smile grew wide.
“Guess what?” Andrew interrupted with just as equal excitement and it was almost like looking at the same face twice. “My teacher says there’s going to be a robotics competition, and I already told her I’m signing up.”
Hannah’s heart softened. “Wow! That’s wonderful, both of you.”
She was so happy they had a good first day and it felt like a huge relief. She had pictured them running towards her hating the school and for some reason she wanted them to feel that way as a sign they shouldn’t be there but maybe she was wrong.
Maybe this was exactly where they were meant to be.
As she drove, she listened to their overlapping stories who sat beside who, what the cafeteria food tasted like, how Amelia’s new friend thought Andrew looked “cute.” He groaned loudly at that. The laughter that filled the car made her realize something she hadn’t felt in a long time actual growth and contentment that wasn’t forced.
