Whispers Between Heartbeats 

HANNAH’S POV: 

FEW HOURS LATER: 

I stepped into the room with my heart racing after talking to Janet who completely aggrevated me. The heaven’s know I just wanted to rip her hair out of her head not just because she had shot and traumatized my angels but because even after everything she still had the audacity to claim Elijah was her partner. I was in utter disbelief arid I promised myself that after all these was done, I was going to work with the police to ensure that she was behind bars for this because lord knows who she would hurt next. 

Elijah seemed to be asleep and my heart sank when I saw him laying on the hospital bed in hospital clothing with everything connected and hearing the beeping of machine sound. 

What if he had died? How would I have felt? What if the doctors are wrong and it hit a vital organ? 

I dismissed all those thoughts and just held his hand and took a seat next to him, with tears in my eyes trying to find words to say to him. 

Should I thank him for accompanying us even though I had rudely told him not to? I just imagined if he hadn’t, then it would have been more in that bed fighting for my life. 

This had to be the most selfless thing anyone has done for me, and this is in the midst of growing up with so many selfish people. 

I could mutter a ‘thank you’ and hold his hand close to my face. But my attention was taken away when I recalled another person was in the room and I could just feel Mrs Martinez standing there, just staring and she quietly said, “I will be back to see him later today.” 

I didn’t utter a word and I heard her leave.
