Walking out of the hospital, Katrina was in such a spectacular mood that she found herself unconsciously humming a little tune.
Before she got pregnant, she had been incredibly frustrated, even going so far as to wonder if she needed medical testing. Luckily, Ivy had talked her off the ledge.
Listening to her mother-in-law today, she realized that getting pregnant just two months into their marriage was incredibly lucky and incredibly fast.
Her mother-in-law hadn't stopped praising her for being amazing.
At the time, she was too overwhelmed with the joy of the pregnancy to really think about it. But now, looking back, why was her mother-in-law praising *her*? Shouldn't she have been praising her son for his... stamina?
Hahaha—
Katrina got into her car but didn't rush to start the engine. Instead, her first priority was to share the incredible news.
But she couldn't tell Ivy. Ivy and Jamison shared everything. Telling Ivy was the exact same thing as telling Jamison—and Jamison would immediately text his best friend.
She was determined to wait until Naylor got back so she could tell him to his face and watch his reaction.
So, her mother was the only option.
When the call connected, Willa was right in the middle of her afternoon nap.
But seeing her daughter's name on the screen, Willa knew it had to be important. Katrina wouldn't call during her rest period otherwise.
"Katrina, what's wrong?"
"Mom, were you sleeping?" Katrina held the phone to her ear, every inch of her face radiating pure joy as she spoke.
"Yeah, just a little nap. Are you still at work? Have you eaten yet?"
"I ate. I'm actually at the hospital right now."
"The hospital?" Willa instantly panicked. "What's wrong? Are you sick?"
"No, my period was late, so I came to the hospital to get checked. Professor Penn personally had them draw my blood—Mom, I'm pregnant!"
Willa didn't even wait for her daughter to finish the sentence before she shot straight up in bed, her face trembling as a massive smile broke across her features.
"Pre—pregnant? Already? Oh, thank god! This is wonderful! I'm going to be a grandmother! I'm going to be a grandmother!" Willa was so overjoyed she could barely stutter out the words, her hands fluttering in sheer, helpless excitement.
Every mother's deepest wish is to see her precious daughter find the perfect man and start a beautiful family. With her terminal illness advancing rapidly and her time running out, Willa wanted nothing more than to see her daughter's life complete.
Learning that her daughter was pregnant, that she was going to be a mother, filled Willa with an overwhelming surge of joy that no one else could possibly comprehend.
"That's right! You're going to be a grandmother, and I'm going to be a mom!"
"This is amazing! What did Naylor say? Is he ready to be a dad? He wasn't even planning on getting married not that long ago, and now you two..."
"Mom, I'm completely comfortable. If I wasn't, I wouldn't be here," Katrina replied cheerfully, sitting down and picking up her fork. "Dad, Mom, let's eat."
"Excellent, excellent," Dr. Wilson said happily as he took his seat. "It's practically a miracle getting three people around this table for dinner. We're lucky if that rascal Naylor comes home to eat with us once a month."
Katrina instantly came to his defense. "He really is swamped with work. Whenever I have time, I'll come over, and I'll make sure to drag him along with me."
"Wonderful, just wonderful." Listening to her daughter-in-law, Professor Penn's laughter never ceased.
The three of them chatted happily as they ate. Right when the atmosphere was at its liveliest, Katrina's phone rang.
She grabbed it, saw the screen, and smiled at the older couple. "The guy on the business trip is video calling me."
She smiled as she answered the call.
"Hello~"
Naylor's face appeared on the screen, matching her bright smile. "Eating dinner?"
"Yeah, the food was already on the table when I got here. Mom and Dad were waiting for me." Katrina panned the camera around the table. "Look, it's a massive feast!"
Seeing the spread of delicious food on the table, Naylor immediately protested. "That's so unfair. When I come home, I'm lucky if I get a basic meatloaf and potatoes. How come you guys are eating a Michelin-star feast the second I leave?"
He wasn't entirely wrong to accuse Dr. Wilson and Professor Penn.
