Ivy nodded, then splashed cold water on her face, the simple act helping to ground her.

When they re-entered the room, Thad rose from the sofa. "We should go and let Jamison get some rest. We'll be back for the surgery."

Davina nodded. After another look at Ivy and a few brief words of encouragement to Jamison, she and Thad left.

Once the door closed, Ivy turned to her husband and held up the bank card. "Davina insisted. She said there's three hundred thousand on it, PIN is your birthday. For medical bills and hiring nurses."

Jamison nodded. "Okay. You hold onto it. Use it to go shopping or buy yourself something nice."

"I'm hardly in the mood for shopping," Ivy said, thinking he had a strange sense of humor to be joking at a time like this.

Jamison smiled and held out his hand. She walked over and took it, letting him pull her down to sit in his lap.

"Ivy, I want you to live your life just as you always have," he said softly, his grip gentle on her hand. "Don't change anything for me. I don't want to feel like a burden."

She turned to look at him, considering his words before nodding. "Alright. I've been busy with graduation anyway. A few major securities firms and investment banks have been in touch, so I was planning to meet with them."

"Good. That's great. No matter what happens, you need to focus on your own path."

Ivy nodded again, silent, but let her body relax against his.

"Jamison…"

"You have to fight. Don't leave me alone."
