Since she couldn't control the length of his life, she had to expand its depth.
That meant cherishing every single day they had together, experiencing as many new things as possible, and creating countless beautiful moments.
"Alright. Honestly, I feel strong enough right now, so why don't we get started on the planning?" Jamison couldn't wait. He harbored his own fears of his condition suddenly worsening, leaving him bedridden and completely dependent.
Ivy kept her tone light. "Sure! Just leave everything to me. You focus on resting and recovering so you can be a groomsman in peak condition!"
"Deal."
Using the wedding as a smokescreen, Ivy easily deceived Jamison, leaving him completely oblivious to anything unusual.
Even when she didn't visit him for an entire day, he didn't think twice about it, assuming his wife was just busy meeting with wedding planners.
Over the next two days, Ivy underwent exhaustive pre-op examinations and passed the hospital's ethics review board.
Everything was in place; all she needed now was the green light.
Having cleared every hurdle, Ivy went to plead her case once more. "Director Wylde, I've passed all the assessments. Please, let's do it tomorrow. Every day sooner we operate is a day sooner he can start recovering."
Director Wylde fully understood her urgency and was deeply moved by the profound love between the couple.
While fast-tracking the procedure bent the rules slightly, he was willing to risk the professional blowback to ensure the surgery went smoothly. He finally agreed. "Alright, tomorrow it is. Make sure you fast for eight hours beforehand—no food or water."
"Got it. But what about him? Does he need to fast too?" Ivy worried about how to trick Jamison into not eating or drinking.
"That's easy. I'll put in a medical order right now saying he needs a liver CT scan first thing in the morning, which requires fasting." Having been drafted into this grand deception of love, Director Wylde's lying skills were improving by the day.
"Perfect. Thank you, Director Wylde."
When Ivy returned to the room, Jamison glanced at her, his expression as tender as ever. "Another busy day? How are the preparations coming along?"
"The initial plan is set, but I want it to be a surprise, so I'm not telling you any details." Ivy was practically a natural at lying by now.
Jamison looked genuinely excited.
That night, Ivy was uncharacteristically clingy, holding Jamison tightly and falling asleep curled up in his arms.
After all, once the surgery was over, they would be forced into separate hospital beds for at least a couple of weeks.
The next morning, they both woke up early.
Ivy made sure to remind him, "You have a scan later, so remember—no food or water."
Ivy stared at him but didn't leave immediately. Instead, she walked back to his side.
Before Jamison could ask what was wrong, she leaned down and kissed him deeply.
"..." Jamison was completely bewildered.
Although he enjoyed the moment, his wife's unusual behavior was setting off alarm bells in his head.
When she finally pulled away, she noticed his perplexed expression. Terrified of blowing her cover, she quickly forced a bright smile. "I'm going to go calm them down and bring them back here as soon as possible. Be a good boy and get your scan done."
Phrasing it that way made it seem like she was just trying to soothe him so he wouldn't be jealous of his own sons.
Sure enough, Jamison chuckled. "I'm not so petty that I can't tolerate my own kids."
Ivy shot him a playful glare. "Good. I'm leaving now. Bye!"
With a smile on his face, Jamison watched his wife walk out the door.
The moment it clicked shut behind her, Ivy's expression turned dead serious, and she broke into a fast jog down the hallway.
