But Jamison, completely consumed by the terror of his wife being in danger, couldn't hear a word. He frantically smashed the down button for the elevator.
With a soft ding, the doors slid open. Jamison launched himself forward, nearly colliding head-on with Ivy, who was rushing out.
They crashed into each other. As soon as Jamison recognized her, his face twisted in a chaotic mix of sheer relief and absolute terror. He gripped her arms tightly, his panicked eyes scanning every inch of her body.
"Ivy, are you okay? Were you really going to go through with the surgery?! Are you out of your mind?! I would rather die than let you take a risk like that!" Jamison's initial frantic concern quickly exploded into an uncontrollable, furious roar.
Watching his disheveled expression and the stark terror in his eyes, all of Ivy's pent-up emotions broke free. Tears streamed uncontrollably down her face.
She had changed back into her regular clothes, but the sharp scent of hospital antiseptic still clung to her.
As Jamison's shouting faded, he saw her staring up at him with tear-filled eyes, unblinking, looking so innocent and devastated that his heart violently seized.
Unable to stop himself, he pulled her into a bone-crushing embrace.
Davina, who had come down with Ivy, witnessed the scene and couldn't stop her own tears from falling.
They were completely blocking the elevator, trapping the people inside and preventing anyone from getting on.
Davina gently nudged them, softly breaking the moment. "Go talk in your room. Don't disturb the other patients."
They were in a hospital, surrounded by recovering patients and their families.
Jamison's roaring had already caused several people to poke their heads out of their rooms to see the drama.
Reminded of where they were, Ivy gathered herself slightly and tugged on her husband's sleeve. "Don't be like this. See, I'm perfectly fine. I'm okay..."
Jamison loosened his grip just enough to inspect her from head to toe once more.
"Come on, let's go back to your room." Ivy knew they needed to have a serious talk. She took his hand and led him down the hall, as if guiding a stubborn child back to his bed.
Fearing the couple might get into a massive fight if left alone, Thad and Davina followed them inside. However, they kept their distance, sitting quietly in the visitor's area.
"You haven't eaten, and you're weak. Lie down first," Ivy coaxed gently, guiding him back to the hospital bed.
At first, Jamison refused, but Ivy firmly pushed him down onto the mattress. "If you want me to explain, you need to be a good boy and lie down. Your body can't handle this kind of stress."
