**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 105: The Whole Truth**

[Third-Person’s POV]

“Take off your mask.”

In that moment, Alexander was taken aback, the words cutting through the fog of his thoughts. He hadn’t even registered that he was still wearing it. Just like his beloved Luna, he had been operating on autopilot since the chaos of the previous night unfolded. The weight of the world had pressed down on him, leaving him numb and disoriented.

With a swift motion, he reached up, fingers brushing the edge of the mask that had become a part of him. He peeled it away in one fluid movement, revealing his true self for the first time in what felt like an eternity. This time, there was no gasp of disbelief, no stunned silence hanging in the air.

Evelyn met his gaze with a smile that lit up her face, as if she had known all along what lay hidden beneath that absurd disguise.

But perhaps she did know. Or maybe, just maybe, the exhaustion that had settled in her bones had dulled her senses to the absurdity of the moment.

Taking his offered hand, Evelyn stepped forward, and together they made their way toward the dining room. For the first time since their paths had crossed, they felt a sense of clarity, as if they were finally seeing one another in their true forms.

As they strolled through the various corridors, they caught the attention of nearly every staff member, their conversations momentarily stalling as the Alpha and Luna of the pack walked hand in hand, presenting a united front.

Alexander cast a sideways glance at Evelyn, delighting in the sight of her amusement.

“This feels strange, doesn’t it?” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.

Given the tumultuous events that had transpired, he was astonished when a soft giggle escaped her lips. It was almost surreal; this was a woman who had been drugged, who had narrowly escaped a horrific fate, and who was grappling with fragmented memories.

And yet, there she was, managing to smile amidst the chaos.

He was determined to uncover the truth of what had transpired the night before he found Evelyn, but first, he owed her an explanation for the charade he had maintained regarding his wheelchair.

As they entered the dining room, they were met by Nina, her expression a mix of anxiety and curiosity, and Wendy, who wore a look of satisfaction. The two women were engaged in their usual chatter but quickly shifted their focus to the couple before them.

Wendy approached with a bright smile. “I’m not entirely certain what sparked this revelation, but I must say, I’m thrilled it has brought you both together like this,” she said, her tone warm and encouraging.

Alexander noticed Evelyn shift uncomfortably beside him, and a heavy feeling settled in his stomach. He wished the circumstances were different, that they could celebrate this moment without the shadow of their recent trauma looming over them.

Unfortunately, the catalyst for this newfound connection had been an enemy’s cruel machinations.

Wrapping an arm around Evelyn’s waist, he pulled her closer, feeling the warmth of her body against his. “Things are going to change significantly from now on,” he declared, his voice firm with conviction.

Wendy nodded, her expression turning serious. “Evelyn, why don’t you come by my rooms later today? There’s so much we need to catch up on, and I’m sure you could use a friendly ear.”

Evelyn offered a polite smile, but Alexander could sense her hesitation, the way her eyes darted away momentarily.

“Actually, I think it would be best if Evelyn took a mental day for herself,” he interjected, his protective instincts kicking in. “Let the two of you catch up tomorrow instead.”

With that, he guided them to the table, requesting coffee, a strong cup of tea, and two ibuprofen for Evelyn. He watched as she took her aspirin and sipped her tea, his heart pounding in his chest. He had been preparing for this conversation for weeks, and yet, now that the moment had arrived, the words felt stuck in his throat.
