**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 134: A Plan In Motion**
In the tangled web of their lives, Fiona found herself ensnared in a situation not unlike that of her friends, Samantha and Michael. Once a respected figure in her community, she had plummeted from her pedestal, her reputation shattered like glass after the scandal involving Evelyn’s tea mixture. The whispers of her misdeed had traveled far and wide, despite Alexander’s attempts to publicly address the situation. It was as if a dark cloud had descended upon her, obscuring her once-bright future.
Fiona could only watch helplessly as her standing in society disintegrated. The fallout was swift and brutal; the members of Alexander’s pack had undoubtedly reached out to their counterparts in neighboring territories, ensuring that her name became synonymous with betrayal. No one wanted to be seen in her company, much less consult her for medical advice. The trust she had painstakingly built over the years evaporated in an instant, leaving her feeling like a ghost haunting the very halls she once roamed with pride.
In the depths of her despair, Fiona found a scapegoat in Evelyn. She raged against her, convinced that it was Evelyn’s influence that had clouded Alexander’s judgment. He had never reprimanded her before—never had a reason to. But now, it seemed, he was a man transformed, wielding his authority like a weapon against her.
One moment, her life had been normal, filled with the mundane rhythms of her profession, and the next, it was as though the very fabric of her existence was unraveling before her eyes. The tears she shed were a testament to her anguish, and she found herself pouring her heart out to Caroline, desperate for support. “You have to talk to Alexander for me,” she pleaded, her voice trembling with desperation. Yet even Caroline, her closest ally, hesitated to confront the truth of Fiona’s blunder.
“It’s one thing to have a grudge against Evelyn, dear,” Caroline said, her tone laced with sympathy but edged with reality. “But when your intent was to poison hundreds, that’s a whole different ballgame.”
Caroline, who had a knack for swaying public opinion, found herself unable to salvage Fiona’s reputation this time.
“Honestly, the best thing you can do is wait it out,” she advised gently. “Give it time. People have notoriously short memories; they might move on or forget.”
But Fiona was unwilling to bide her time. Each passing day was a sharp reminder of her downfall, each ignored greeting a dagger to her heart. It drove her deeper into a pit of bitterness and despair. She was consumed by thoughts of revenge. When news of Michael’s imprisonment reached her, she wasted no time in expressing her disdain. “It’s hardly surprising, is it? This was all part of Alexander and Evelyn’s scheme,” she told Caroline, her voice dripping with venom.
Fiona felt a grim satisfaction at the thought of Caroline experiencing the same betrayal she had. “Only when you’ve been scorched by that infamous couple will you truly grasp the pain I’m feeling,” she mused, bitterness coursing through her veins. Caroline, however, had her own battles to fight, having approached the Alpha King in a desperate attempt to plea for Michael’s release.
The tension in Isabella’s living room was palpable as the women gathered to discuss their next steps. Samantha’s inclusion in the meeting was expected, and her dramatic entrance was no surprise. But Fiona sensed that Samantha had unearthed something significant, her excitement palpable as she clutched a gossip column tightly in her hands.
With a flourish, she presented the article to the group. “You won’t believe this,” she declared, a mischievous glint in her eye. “Alexander and Evelyn are planning a second wedding.”
Fiona’s expression contorted into one of confusion and irritation. “A second wedding? Who in their right mind cares about that?” she snapped, her tone sharp.
Samantha shot her a pointed look, her eyes narrowing. She passed the article to Isabella and Caroline, who read it with varying degrees of interest and annoyance. Caroline’s lips pressed into a tight line, while Isabella erupted into laughter.
“Oh, come on! Alexander regrets not giving Evelyn the wedding of her dreams,” she scoffed. “I can’t help but wonder if he’d feel the same way if he knew the truth behind her agreement to marry him.”
The room fell silent, the weight of Isabella’s words hanging heavy in the air. Fiona leaned in, curiosity piqued. “What do you mean?”
Isabella’s smirk widened. “Evelyn only married Alexander because of the money he paid Leonard and me. We made it clear that her brother’s treatments depended on it,” she explained, her tone almost gleeful. “Evelyn never had any genuine desire to be with him.”
Samantha chimed in, her voice dripping with satisfaction. “The day she thought her ‘boyfriend’ was going to propose was the same day she learned her mother and Leonard had twisted the contracts, forcing her into this marriage.”
