**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
By Sophia Reed
**Alexander’s Ambitions**
[Evelyn’s POV]
“Are you really going to make me walk all the way to the dining room?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, laced with fatigue.
Every fiber of my being felt like it was on the verge of collapsing, as if I might just crumple to the floor at any moment.
In the heat of passion, the thought of making love on the library table had seemed tantalizing, an exhilarating idea that sent shivers of excitement down my spine. But now, as the last remnants of pleasure faded away and clarity returned, I realized that perhaps it hadn’t been the most prudent choice after all.
My muscles were protesting loudly as Alexander tugged me along the corridor, and I could feel the weariness settling in.
He glanced back at me, a playful smirk dancing on his lips, and my heart fluttered in response. That same look had ignited a fire within me earlier, a memory that sent a rush of heat coursing through my body.
I recalled how he had lifted my legs over his shoulders, how each thrust had taken my breath away, leaving me gasping for air. In those moments, I felt a flicker of Alexander’s jealousy—an emotion I had never expected from him.
The thought of someone like Alexander feeling envious of Liam was almost laughable. It was such a ridiculous notion that it could have pushed me into fits of laughter. The two of them were worlds apart, and the comparison was utterly absurd.
If I allowed myself to dwell on it, I would have to confront the embarrassing truth: I had wasted precious time on Liam.
Sure, he had been kind, at least on the surface. He had been polite when we were together, but I had misread his feelings. It was painfully clear now how easily he had dropped me for Samantha. But I had moved on from that chapter of my life, letting go of the remnants of our failed relationship long ago.
There was no sense in clinging to something that had turned out to be so hollow when I had found myself in a much better place—with a far better person.
Alexander was shaping up to be everything I had ever desired in a partner. Yes, he had his flaws, but then again, who didn’t? I was more than willing to embrace him for all his quirks, his captivating qualities, and even his dangerous ambitions.
Unlike Liam, who had only ever seen me as a means to an end for his own pack, Alexander treated me as an equal. He opened my eyes to a world I had never imagined existed. He was undeniably a generous lover, that much was clear.
As I felt myself approaching that exquisite peak, my eyes rolled back in my head, and I reveled in the sensations he evoked within me. He was unafraid to explore the depths of our intimacy, and I craved more.
Yet, part of me longed for us to retreat back to the bedroom, where we could indulge in our desires without interruption.
“Would you prefer if I carried you?” he asked, his tone smooth and teasing.
I scrunched my nose and narrowed my eyes at him, a playful defiance rising within me.
“Don’t you dare,” I hissed, my voice low.
God only knew how many ears might be listening in the library.
The mere thought sent a wave of heat rushing to my cheeks. Alexander chuckled, clearly amused by my discomfort.
“Are you sure?” he challenged, his expression dripping with smugness. “I can see your legs are still trembling.”
Indeed, they were. I felt as if I were a newborn fawn, struggling to find my footing. I shot him an unamused glare, unwilling to give in to his teasing.
“Well, perhaps the next time you decide to have your way with me, you’ll be generous enough to choose a location with a little more cushioning,” I replied, my tone tight.
The smug grin vanished from his face in an instant. It was rare to see Alexander genuinely taken aback, but at that moment, he looked as if I had just questioned his very manhood.
In a heartbeat, I found myself pinned against the wall, his hands gripping my wrists above my head, his thigh pressing between my legs. No matter how much I squirmed, I was utterly trapped.
