Chapter 14
Hold on a second…
If by some chance Alexander was eavesdropping on the conversation happening downstairs in the living room, then it was clear I was being subjected to yet another one of his damn tests.
Just the thought of it made my blood boil with frustration.
What was the point of all this? Was he trying to push me away, hoping I’d back out of this marriage?
None of the other potential Lunas had ever been forced to walk down the aisle, let alone endure these pointless trials. It made me seriously question his intentions. Was Alexander still trying to intimidate me, to scare me off?
Sadly, I couldn’t find a single reason to believe otherwise. He had deliberately sent me to face his parents alone. But why? Was he trying to gauge how I would behave around them?
I couldn’t imagine what he expected to hear or see. After all, I barely knew either of them. Something was definitely going on beneath the surface.
I quickly remembered what Nina had mentioned just moments before I stepped into the living room—about Alexander’s grandmother’s attitude toward Caroline. Maybe this was another test, designed to measure my character and see where my loyalties lay within Alexander’s family.
I felt the urge to sigh deeply and abandon this ridiculous ordeal altogether. These endless trials were wearing me down, draining every ounce of energy I had left.
If Alexander was so suspicious of me, why didn’t he just ask me questions directly? Why all this drama?
But, as always, it seemed I had no choice. I was tempted to storm up the main stairs and drag Alexander down myself, but deep down, I knew this was a challenge I had to face on my own.
Suddenly, Caroline took a small step forward, deciding to add her two cents to the conversation. My head was pounding from the mounting tension.
Her voice was sickly sweet, a clear mask of fake kindness.
“Well, even if you did marry Alexander for his money, it wouldn’t matter,” she said softly. “Since Alexander is physically impaired now, it’s been difficult to find a strong Alpha daughter to be Luna. The previous ones all got scared off.”
Henry sighed heavily, rubbing his face roughly with one hand. “The other Lunas came from smaller packs, and I have no doubt you come from an even smaller, useless one,” he said with a derisive laugh.
My anger was bubbling over, and this time I couldn’t hold back the sharp retort that burst out of me, aimed directly at Henry.
