**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 143: Lights Out**

[Evelyn’s POV]

As I stepped closer to Isabella, I could see her body tense up, an involuntary reaction that confirmed just how formidable I appeared to her in that moment. A sense of satisfaction washed over me. It felt as if a long-buried truth was clawing its way to the surface, sending tremors through my very bones and igniting every nerve ending in my body.

“That’s it, isn’t it?” I pressed, my voice steady but low, laced with an intensity that demanded her attention. “My entire existence, you made it your mission to ensure that Samantha always came out on top. Clothes, lavish parties, all the attention—everything was funneled to her. But the one thing you couldn’t guarantee her was a decent marriage.”

My gaze remained locked on her, fierce and unwavering.

“So, in a twisted turn of fate, you decided to try and sabotage mine.”

I could see Isabella’s carefully composed facade beginning to crack, her calm demeanor fraying at the edges. The anger simmering beneath the surface was palpable, and I could feel her frustration radiating off her in waves. In a sudden burst of energy, she sprang up from the couch, fists clenched tightly at her sides.

“You have absolutely no idea what it’s like to fight tooth and nail for everything you possess in this life,” she spat, her voice rising with each word. “You’re the daughter of a respectable Alpha—all you’ve ever known are opportunities handed to you on a silver platter. Me? My first husband fell gravely ill, leaving me with nothing but a mountain of debt and a daughter who has no real prospects or skills.”

I watched as she began to pace back and forth along the length of the couch, her movements frantic and restless. Her eyes, once sharp and cool, now mirrored my own sense of desperation and madness.

“So what if I clung to the first Alpha I could find?” she continued, her voice tinged with a mix of defiance and vulnerability. “It’s not like I had a son who could carry on my family’s name and legacy. I had to start over from scratch. Yes, I made sure Samantha was the center of attention. I ensured she had the very best of everything.”

“Yeah, and look where that got me,” I shot back, my voice dripping with sarcasm.

Both Isabella and I turned as we heard Samantha’s voice cut through the tension, her figure framed in the doorway of the living room. She looked disheveled, the shadows under her eyes revealing a sleepless night. With purpose, she strode into the room, stopping just a few feet away from me, her posture rigid with indignation.

“I was raised with the best because that’s what I was led to believe I deserved,” she declared, her voice trembling with barely contained frustration. “When I married Liam, my life was supposed to be a fairytale. But because of you, it has turned into a living nightmare!”

I blinked in disbelief, my mouth agape. “Me?! How the hell is your disastrous marriage my fault? Have you ever considered that the reason you’re failing as a Luna in your own pack is that you contribute nothing of value?”

Samantha’s eyes widened, a flash of panic crossing her features. “What the hell did Liam say to you? Huh?! How could you possibly know what’s happening between us?”

I rolled my eyes, exasperated. “For crying out loud, Samantha. Liam hasn’t uttered a single word to me, and that’s only because I refuse to give him any of my time or energy. He used me to sort out his pack’s issues and then tossed me aside for you. But I’m sure it came as a shock to him when he realized exactly what kind of person you are.”

“Oh, really?” Samantha retorted, taking a daring step closer, her lips curling into a sneer. “And just what kind of person am I?”

“You’re a self-absorbed, clueless prima donna who knows nothing about caring for anyone but yourself,” I replied, my voice steady and clear. “For heaven’s sake, you tried to use an aphrodisiac on your husband! Don’t you grasp how immoral and unethical that is?”

It was evident that my words were falling on deaf ears. Samantha merely tilted her head, dismissing my concerns with a wave of her hand.

“So what? It didn’t even work, did it?”

“My God, that’s not the point,” I muttered, my frustration bubbling over.
