Chapter 145: Put Yourself In Her Shoes

Wendy Kington couldn’t shake the sense of disbelief as she trudged once more toward Alexander’s office. It felt like a cruel twist of fate that she was retracing this same path again, a path she had walked not long ago when Alexander was grappling with the emotional upheaval of Michael re-entering their lives.

How many more times would she have to intervene to salvage her grandson’s marriage?

What was it about Evelyn that Alexander failed to recognize? She was, without a doubt, the best thing that had ever graced his life.

From the very first moment Wendy had met Evelyn, she had felt an undeniable connection, a spark that hinted at the potential for a beautiful partnership. Rena, on the other hand, was undeniably stunning, but Wendy had seen through the façade. Rena was a fortune hunter, a woman who sought status and wealth above all else.

If only Wendy had been able to provide Alexander with the encouragement and support he needed back then, perhaps things would have turned out differently. But Wendy held a firm conviction that everything happened for a reason. A large part of her believed in destiny, yet she also understood that sometimes destiny required a gentle nudge in the right direction. That was precisely what she intended to do today.

With a deep frown etched on her face, Wendy approached Alexander’s office, her heart heavy with determination. She was furious with her grandson for his treatment of Evelyn, and she was resolute in her mission to set things right.

As she reached the office door, she flung it open with a force that echoed through the room. Alexander looked up from his desk, surprise flickering in his eyes, while Oliver discreetly excused himself, fully aware that he should steer clear of the impending storm.

“Hello, Grandmother—” Alexander began, but Wendy cut him off with a raised hand, silencing him instantly.

“Save it,” she snapped, her tone brooking no argument.

Alexander sighed, closing his eyes briefly as he leaned back in his chair, knowing all too well what was coming—yet another lecture.

The truth was, he had been juggling numerous thoughts and responsibilities, all while trying to make sense of his relationship with Evelyn. He had every intention of reaching out to her, but time had slipped through his fingers like sand. A wave of guilt washed over him as he glanced out the window, noticing that the sun had already dipped below the horizon, leaving the world cloaked in twilight.

He truly wanted to talk to her. Part of him yearned to let go of the past, while another part was still tethered to the pain of betrayal.

“Evelyn told me what happened at that dinner party,” Wendy remarked, her voice steady yet probing.

He let out a humorless chuckle, shaking his head in disbelief. “It was… tense.”

Wendy arched an eyebrow, settling herself into one of the chairs across from him. “You and I both know that entire evening was nothing but a setup.”

Alexander rubbed his temples, feeling the weight of her words. “I know.”

“Then why, for the love of all that is good, are you taking your frustrations out on Evelyn when you should be having an open conversation with her?” she pressed, her voice rising slightly.

“We did talk it out,” he insisted, his tone defensive.

Her skepticism was palpable. “Did you really?”

“Yes! And I think I have every right to be angry that my own wife only married me for my money—”

“Money that went directly to her brother’s medical expenses,” she interjected sharply.

With a long, drawn-out breath, Alexander conceded, “I should have known this from the very beginning.”

Wendy leaned back in her chair, a puzzled expression crossing her face. “Let’s not start throwing stones here. You both used this arranged marriage to your advantage. You seem to forget that I know you better than anyone, Alexander. You scared off the first two women the Alpha King tried to set you up with. For years, you told me you had no use for a wife, yet when the time came, you agreed to the wedding. Why?”

Her questions struck him like a slap to the face, igniting a deeper sense of shame within him.
