**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 160: Untapped Rage**
To say that Alexander was taken aback would be a gross understatement. The turmoil within him was far more profound than mere shock.
He struggled to comprehend the sight of Evelyn donning his mask piece. The realization struck him like a bolt of lightning, illuminating the dark corners of his mind: this was the very reason she had summoned Oliver earlier. Were the scars etched upon her skin so ghastly that she felt compelled to conceal them?
A wave of sorrow washed over him, a heavy weight pressing against his heart, knowing that she felt unable to share such a significant part of herself with him. Yet, what troubled him even more was the revelation of a side of Evelyn he had never encountered before—an aspect of her being that was both heartbreaking and terrifying.
She had tapped into a reservoir of anger that was raw, unyielding, and utterly captivating. It was a lethal force, one he had only glimpsed a few times in their shared history. But this was different; this was a tempest of emotion that he should have anticipated yet failed to see coming. In his eyes, Evelyn was a gentle soul, incapable of inflicting harm on even the smallest of creatures, let alone another human being.
And yet, he was acutely aware that she had meant every syllable she had hurled at Michael while he was confined in the cells. Her words had been laced with venomous intent, a promise that if anything were to befall Edward, she would not hesitate to take his life.
He had no doubt that she would follow through on that threat. Alexander’s heart ached with the hope that such a day would remain forever out of reach.
The moment Evelyn’s voice sliced through the thick tension in the air, he sensed that something was amiss. Her tone was hollow, sharp as a blade; her movements were precise and calculated. A knot of anxiety twisted in his stomach at the thought of Samantha and Evelyn sharing the same space. The last thing he wanted was to ignite Evelyn’s emotions and send her spiraling down into despair.
But it was too late for caution.
In an instant, chaos erupted. Evelyn had Samantha ensnared by the neck, her back pressed firmly against the wall. Alexander’s heart raced as he watched the scene unfold, a mixture of disbelief and dread coursing through him.
Samantha struggled to draw breath, her face contorted in panic as Evelyn tightened her grip. Then, in a shocking display of fury, Evelyn shattered the glass frame hanging above them, the sound echoing like gunfire in the room.
Alexander’s anger flared at her reckless disregard for her own safety. It wasn’t the frame that concerned him—it was the very real possibility that she could injure herself in the process. For heaven’s sake, she had only just begun to heal from her last bout of trauma!
As he observed her grasp one of the jagged shards of glass, clarity struck him like lightning. He understood her intentions all too well.
“Tell us where Isabella and Fiona are. Or I swear I will carve the word ‘ugly’ into your face,” she had declared, her voice a chilling whisper.
In that moment, an instinctual drive surged within him. He moved swiftly, closing the distance between them, and grasped her wrist firmly before she could act on her threat.
When Evelyn turned her gaze to him, a fire burned in her eyes, and he felt as though he were staring into the abyss. There was a haunting emptiness there, a darkness that swallowed all traces of color, leaving only the stark contrast of her dilated pupils.
The situation had spiraled into a chaotic whirlwind, and he realized that it was entirely up to him to navigate them through this storm. If he didn’t find a way to diffuse the tension, things could escalate into something truly horrific.
His concern was singular and unwavering: Evelyn. He was indifferent to Samantha’s fate; his heart ached for Evelyn, knowing that this tempest of anger would not last forever. Eventually, the fire would burn out, leaving her to grapple with the emotional fallout.
Could she forgive herself for inflicting pain on another? Deep down, he recognized that Evelyn was not inherently cruel or violent. She was in a fragile state, and the last thing she needed was to carry the burden of regret on her shoulders.
I can’t allow her to despise herself even more, he thought, even if Samantha deserves every bit of this.
“Doing this to Samantha won’t change a thing,” he said, his voice steady and calm. “This isn’t who you are.”
