**Chapter 167: A Breaking Point**
[Evelyn’s POV]
My heart raced, and I felt as if my eyes were about to pop out of my head as I stared at Alexander, who was gaping back at me, utterly speechless.
Was he serious right now?!
I couldn’t help but notice the intense glare in his eyes as I desperately searched his face for any hint that this was some kind of joke. But deep down, I knew it wasn’t.
A wave of raw anger surged through me, igniting a fury I couldn’t contain. I sprang up from the chair, my hands slamming down on his desk with a force that echoed in the silence of the room.
“And just what the hell is that supposed to mean?” I hissed, my voice low and dangerous.
Alexander narrowed his eyes, his stoic demeanor unwavering. He crossed his arms over his chest, raising a single brow in challenge.
“I saw how the two of you were interacting earlier,” he noted, his voice tight with tension.
My brows knitted together, and confusion twisted my features into a mask of bewilderment.
“And?” I pressed, my heart pounding. “He was just telling me about Edward’s health records.”
“That’s not all that was going on,” he replied coldly, his tone like ice.
I narrowed my eyes, defiance sparking within me. “Well, then please enlighten me as to what else you think you saw.”
A low, menacing growl rumbled from his chest, sending a chill down my spine.
“Don’t test me, Evelyn,” he snapped. “That guy looked like he was just waiting for the right moment to reach across the table and touch you.”
“What?”
Was I even sitting at the same table he was referring to? Was I truly with the same man?
Henry was everything a doctor should be—respectable, informative, and compassionate.
Suddenly, a realization struck me like lightning. I recalled the way Alexander had glared at Henry when they first met. His skepticism was almost instinctual, but I had noticed the subtle way he had sized Henry up, his glower unmistakable.
Alexander is…jealous.
I could hardly wrap my mind around it. Why on earth would he feel that way? How could someone like him, with everything he had, possibly experience jealousy?
He had it all—success, striking good looks, a physique that could rival an Olympian, and the unwavering respect of both the pack and the public.
Yes, Henry was young and undeniably attractive, but there was no reason for me to see him in any light other than that of a ‘professional.’
I shook my head gently, trying to dispel the absurdity of the situation. “You’re being ridiculous, Alexander,” I muttered, frustration lacing my words.
“Oh, so I’m just supposed to sit back and not get annoyed when some random guy can make my Luna laugh and smile while you won’t even spare me a passing glance?!” he shot back, his voice rising in agitation.
“I was being polite,” I replied, my voice steady despite the storm brewing inside me.
“You were willing to drop your guard for him,” he accused, his tone sharp.
My heart raced, and I swallowed hard, trying to push past the lump forming in my throat. “He’s a doctor! He wanted to offer his professional opinion—”
“She said, ‘If you think about it, Alexander never even needed a wife. He was doing just fine on his own until you came along and messed everything up for everyone.’ I didn’t want to believe it, but the more I thought about it, the more I struggled to prove her wrong.”
This time, it was Alexander who averted his gaze. He lowered his head, his mouth opening and closing like he was trying to find the right words but failing.
“She’s right, isn’t she?” I asked quietly, my heart racing. “You never needed or wanted a wife…”
He closed his eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. “It’s true.”
It shouldn’t have hurt as much as it did, but the truth stung like a dagger in my chest. My heart raced, and I felt as if I had reached my breaking point.
“Why did you agree to the marriage, Alexander?”
The corner of his mouth twisted into a bitter, self-loathing sneer.
“The Alpha King had been pressuring me about it for months. Ever since the car accident, which I knew he had a hand in, he was forced to reconsider his approach to controlling my actions and plans.” His expression softened slightly. “When I saw you that day, so determined to make this marriage work, I couldn’t understand why. Even with the ridiculous facade I was putting on, you still wanted to stay. I mainly agreed because I needed to get Gregory off my back. But I’d be lying if I said you didn’t intrigue me.”
I frowned, confusion washing over me. “Intrigued you?”
A boyish smile broke through his tension. “Yes,” he chuckled softly. “I admit that I never saw the need for a Luna. I thought I had everything under control, and the last thing I wanted was for some stranger to come in and stir up trouble. But you didn’t do that. You came in and made everything better. Your kindness and compassion for others are unparalleled. It was everything I didn’t realize I was missing.”
A single tear escaped from my eye, oddly enough, it wasn’t born from pain or anguish.
Alexander reached out, tucking a thick strand of hair behind my ear, his touch gentle.
“Do you have any idea how terrifying it was to find you strapped to that table, covered in blood, on the very brink of death?” he asked, his voice raw with emotion. “I came so close to losing you, Evelyn. I refuse to sit back and let those monsters win by destroying the best thing in my life and the woman I love.”
