The War God Alpha's Arranged Bride (Evelyn and Alexander) novel Chapter 18

Chapter 18

Alexander seemed intent on pulling me away from my swirling thoughts, and, in truth, I welcomed the distraction. Without his presence, I might have spent hours lost in trying to make sense of everything that had happened—how any of it could possibly be real.

Still, I reached out and grabbed the blanket from the far edge of the bed, quickly covering his lower half with it. That’s when my eyes caught the deep seam running down the middle of the mattress. My brow furrowed in puzzlement. When I had first been led into this room to join Alexander in the bath, I had noticed something peculiar: this room had two beds.

Not just any beds, but ones designed to be pushed together when needed, especially for intimate moments.

Just like they were now.

A faint blush crept across my cheeks, and Alexander immediately noticed the subtle change in my expression.

“There’s no need to feel awkward,” he said quietly, his voice calm and reassuring. “Even though it’s technically our wedding night, Nina believes it would be a ‘bad omen’ if we slept apart. But I wasn’t planning on doing anything with you tonight.”

“Oh,” I murmured, surprised by the honesty in his tone.

For some reason, a small part of me felt disappointed by that. Logically, I should have felt relieved—husband or not, I didn’t know Alexander well enough yet to be comfortable taking that step with him.

At least… not just yet.

I circled the bed and settled onto the mattress, letting my body sink into the soft sheets. At first, a flicker of unease gnawed at me, but as I closed my eyes, the heavy pull of sleep began to take hold. My breathing slowed and deepened, and gradually, I drifted off.

Alexander, on the other hand, was far from ready to sleep. Earlier, he had been genuinely taken aback—he hadn’t expected Evelyn to return to his room so soon, or even at all.

The memory of their earlier conversation lingered in his mind. Seeing the raw emotion in her eyes unsettled him, stirring a mix of regret and concern.

He still believed the trials were necessary. What caught him off guard was how quickly Evelyn had figured them out.
