**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 200: Stand Beside You**
Evelyn found herself lost in time, the world around her fading as she recounted every detail to Edward. She was unsure how long she had been speaking, but it felt like hours had slipped away. Just as she was about to suggest a break for him to rest, Edward interrupted her with a firm shake of his head.
“I’ve been resting for the last several months,” he asserted, his tone leaving no room for negotiation.
With his stubbornness in mind, Evelyn pressed on, determined to share everything that had transpired since their last encounter. She began with the moment her life took a dramatic turn—the day she learned she was to be wed to Alexander. Edward’s reaction was immediate; he scoffed at the mention of Liam’s betrayal, a flash of disdain crossing his face. Yet, there was a flicker of satisfaction in his eyes as he recalled how Liam was now ensnared in a miserable marriage with their stepsister.
As she continued, Evelyn could see the shadows of concern darkening Edward’s features when she revealed Isabella’s sinister plot to usurp him and seize control of the Silverwood Pack. The tension in the room thickened when she recounted the harrowing night of torture at the hands of Isabella and Fiona. Edward’s growl was primal, a sound of pure rage that echoed through the room, and for a moment, it seemed as if he might leap from his bed, ready to confront the world outside.
Evelyn, sensing his rising fury, gently placed her hand against his chest, hoping to calm the storm within him.
“It’s alright,” she reassured him softly. “Alexander found me in time and got the help I needed before it was too late.”
Despite his weakened state, Edward’s desire to reach for her was palpable. Evelyn closed her eyes, feeling the warmth of his fingers glide over the healed scars on her skin, a bittersweet reminder of her past struggles.
“And these?” he asked, his voice a mix of curiosity and concern.
Her throat tightened as she struggled to find the right words. “Alexander has an incredible doctor who stitched me back together. Plus, I’ve been experimenting with a serum that has really helped reduce the inflammation and visibility of the scars.”
“My sister, the renowned herbalist,” he mused, a hint of pride lacing his words. “And this Alexander… You sound like you genuinely care for him.”
Evelyn felt heat rise to her cheeks under her brother’s knowing gaze.
“It wasn’t easy at first,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “Our marriage was practically a business arrangement. We were strangers, and now… well, things have changed.”
“Eve, the man waged war against the Royal Family to rescue you after your kidnapping,” Edward stated, his tone serious. “It’s clear he loves you.”
A wave of shyness washed over her, and she nodded, her voice small. “Yeah…”
Despite the joy swelling in her heart at having her brother back, a nagging doubt lingered regarding her feelings for Alexander. Just twelve hours had transformed everything. He was no longer merely the Alpha of the Kingston Pack; he had ascended to the position of Alpha King, a title that carried immense weight and responsibility. What implications did this have for their relationship?
Edward, ever perceptive, sensed her turmoil. He recognized the fondness in her voice when she spoke of Alexander but also the underlying worry that clouded her thoughts.
“Something is troubling you, isn’t it?” he probed gently. She opened her mouth to respond but hesitated, closing it again almost immediately. “Come on, Eve. You know you can confide in me.”
Evelyn bit her lip, the weight of her fears pressing down on her. After a moment, she exhaled slowly, releasing the tension that had built up inside her.
“It’s just… I’m afraid this new position will change Alexander,” she confessed, her voice trembling with vulnerability. “Power can corrupt, and I don’t want it to alter what we’ve built together. It took so long for us to find our way to each other.”
The thought of their relationship fracturing under the strain of his newfound status was unbearable. Being the Alpha King was a monumental responsibility, and she couldn’t help but wonder how it would affect them.
Edward nodded thoughtfully. “You know what I’m going to say, don’t you?”
“You’re going to tell me to stop brooding and just talk to Alexander about it,” she replied, a hint of amusement breaking through her anxiety.
