**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 305: Judy’s Heat**
**Gavin’s POV**
The moment I let out a low, threatening growl, the man gripping Judy turned to face me, his expression shifting from arrogance to sheer panic as recognition dawned.
“Let her go,” I commanded, my voice a low rumble filled with menace.
His hands trembled as he complied, lowering Judy to the ground. I watched her head tilt precariously to the side; she struggled to maintain her balance, a fragile figure swaying in a world that felt too heavy for her. What had this bastard done to her? It was clear to me that it wasn’t merely alcohol that had her in such a state.
She was drugged.
As soon as he released her and turned to confront me, he didn’t remain standing for long. My fist met his face with a sickening crunch, and I felt the satisfying crack of bone beneath my knuckles. He crumpled to the floor, blood streaming from his broken nose, a pitiful sight that fueled my rage.
Just then, the bathroom door swung open, and Nan stumbled out, her eyes widening in horror as she took in the scene before her. When our gazes locked, I could see the confusion and fear etched across her features.
“A… Alpha?” she stammered, blinking rapidly as if trying to shake off a fog. It was evident from her unsteady posture and the way her pupils dilated that she was intoxicated. Her gaze flickered from the fallen man to Judy, and she gasped, “Judy?!”
Without hesitation, she fell to her knees beside Judy, desperately trying to rouse her friend, tears spilling down her cheeks as she fretted over her condition.
I shifted my attention back to the man on the floor, letting my wolf rise just enough to remind him of the danger he was in.
“If I ever see you near her again, it will be the last mistake you make,” I growled, my voice low and threatening.
The man, now trembling and clutching his bleeding nose, could only nod in fear. I had no time to waste on him; Judy needed me. I turned back to her, lying there on the ground, her breath coming in heavy, labored gasps. Her cheeks were flushed, and her eyes were tightly shut, as if she were trying to block out the world around her. I felt a surge of protectiveness. What had he done to her?
Without a second thought, I bent down and lifted her into my arms, cradling her against my chest. Her head nestled against me, and I could feel her trembling, her body radiating heat. Whatever he had given her was igniting a fire within her, pushing her into a state of heat.
I let out another low growl, a warning that sent shivers down the spines of those around us. Even Nan, in her drunken stupor, took a cautious step back.
“Follow me,” I commanded, and Nan nodded quickly, understanding that arguing with me was not an option at this moment. She hurried after me as I made my way through the eerily silent house and out into the cool night air.
Once outside, I inhaled deeply, grateful to escape the suffocating atmosphere of that house. Leroy was already waiting by the car. As soon as he spotted us, he jumped out and rushed around to open the back door.
“Is she okay?” Leroy asked, his voice tinged with concern.
“Take Nan home first, then bring Judy back to the mansion,” I instructed firmly.
“Yes, Alpha,” Leroy replied, helping Nan into the car. I carefully placed Judy inside as well and fastened her seatbelt, sliding in beside her, unwilling to let her out of my sight for even a moment.
The drive felt interminable, the traffic crawling as if mocking my urgency. Once we dropped Nan off, the journey back to the mansion seemed to stretch on forever. I could hear Judy beside me, her breaths growing more frantic, punctuated by soft whimpers. She leaned into me, burying her face in the nape of my neck, inhaling my scent, her body trembling against mine.
“Gavin…” she whispered, her fingers trailing up my torso, sending jolts of electricity through me. Her eyes remained closed, her voice raspy and filled with longing. This was the first time she had spoken since I rescued her from that party. Her lips, swollen and slightly parted, looked tantalizingly inviting, and I fought every instinct to claim them. I had to remind myself that she wasn’t in her right mind. “Help me…”
