**Chapter 49: A Goodnight Kiss**

[Evelyn’s POV]

The atmosphere felt undeniably like a date, a notion that sent a flutter of excitement through me. The ambient lighting was soft and inviting, casting a warm glow over the intimate setting. The smooth, gentle strains of music floated through the air, wrapping around us like a cozy blanket. Here we were, seated at a secluded table for two in what could only be described as one of the most exclusive restaurants in the vicinity.

Every detail of the evening seemed to scream ‘date,’ a notion that felt both thrilling and perplexing. This was the kind of outing I had imagined us enjoying long before we exchanged vows. But, as they say, better late than never.

Yet, a question nagged at the back of my mind. Why had Alexander orchestrated this evening?

Was it simply a test to see how I would manage being seen in public with him? Was that truly the underlying motive? Or could there be something deeper at play?

I made a conscious effort to suppress my growing suspicion, reminding myself to maintain the composed posture I had practiced. Shoulders back, head held high.

Despite the uncertainty swirling in my mind, I had to admit that this gesture was incredibly thoughtful of him.

The restaurant was breathtaking, boasting views that showcased the stunning expanse of the countryside beyond. Whether it was a date or not, I felt a swell of gratitude for the moment we were sharing, especially knowing we were not surrounded by a throng of curious onlookers.

“Well, you have my undivided attention,” I said, breaking the silence.

“That I do,” he replied, a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes.

Fortunately, the silence didn’t linger for too long. Our waiter returned, presenting our drinks, and Alexander took the lead in ordering for both of us. Normally, such an action would have irked me, but in this instance, I found myself relieved. The menu was filled with elaborate descriptions, much of which appeared to be in a foreign tongue.

Perhaps once my etiquette lessons were behind me, I should consider diving into a new language…

As the waiter departed, Alexander turned his gaze back to me, gently clearing his throat before speaking.

“How did you come to discover the Louis-Bosch tea latte?” he inquired, his voice soft and curious.

I perked up in my seat, a rush of warmth flooding my cheeks. In the midst of my anxious thoughts and efforts to compose myself for the evening, I had completely forgotten that I had introduced him to that particular tea.

“Oh, I spent some time in the library, mostly in the herbal section. I was searching for something that would give you a boost of energy without the jitters that often accompany caffeine,” I explained, my enthusiasm bubbling over. “I know from experience that too much coffee can leave me feeling jittery and irritable—not to mention the headaches that follow.”

“You’re absolutely right,” he replied thoughtfully. “I must confess that I’ve been indulging in coffee far too much lately. It’s not the best remedy for my exhaustion.”

I bit my lip, holding back the urge to probe further into why he had been struggling with his sleep. Had his insomnia always been a part of his life, and I simply hadn’t noticed?

We had shared a bedroom for a while, and I had never sensed anything unusual about his sleeping patterns.

“Evelyn, I can see the gears turning in your mind,” Alexander chuckled, a lightness in his tone. “Trust me, my sleep habits are not something you need to worry about.”

My brows knitted together in concern. Was he serious? Hadn’t he heard my concerns when I brought him the tea yesterday? His well-being was my foremost priority.
