The War God Alpha's Arranged Bride (Evelyn and Alexander) novel Chapter 59

**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 59: Confrontation**

In the aftermath of Timothy’s unsettling revelations, Alexander found himself grappling with a growing conviction that Evelyn’s account might indeed hold a kernel of truth. The way she had described Fiona lurking near the tent had always struck him as odd, but now it began to take on a more sinister light. What baffled him, however, was the motivation behind Fiona’s actions. Why would she deliberately choose to sabotage something so crucial?

Yet, despite the nagging questions, the pressing issue of tangible evidence loomed large in his mind.

Determined to unravel the mystery, Alexander took Timothy’s testimony and sought the insight of Oliver, his trusted Beta. The shock on Oliver’s face was palpable as they discussed the situation.

“You’d think discovering a new method to enhance people’s health would spark excitement in someone like Fiona,” Oliver remarked, shaking his head in disbelief.

Alexander grimaced at the thought. It was a reasonable assumption, yet Fiona had always seemed more enamored with the latest gossip than with any genuine pursuit of knowledge. Her interests lay firmly in the realms of fashion, social status, and outshining those around her.

Not exactly the traits one would expect from someone dedicated to the medical profession.

While Fiona was competent in her role, she never ventured beyond the surface of her education, merely adhering to the standard practices without any inclination to innovate.

“When she learned about the tea blend that Evelyn had concocted, why didn’t she inquire further? Why target Evelyn specifically?”

It was clear to Alexander that Fiona was not one to engage in open dialogue, at least not in this scenario.

Yet, something continued to gnaw at him. The more he dissected the situation, the more his mind raced with possibilities. He meticulously examined every facet of the case, piecing together the puzzle.

If they could uncover irrefutable evidence proving Fiona’s involvement, it would reveal that she had intentionally compromised the entire tea mixture. A chilling thought struck him.

“I don’t believe Evelyn was ever meant to be the target,” he stated, his voice steady but filled with conviction.

Oliver raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “What do you mean?”

“Timothy only mentioned to Fiona where the tea mixture was stored. He never revealed that Evelyn tasted every batch before it was sent out,” Alexander clarified, his mind racing.

Oliver’s expression shifted to one of dawning realization. “Are you suggesting that what happened to Evelyn might have been a mere accident—”

“More like a stroke of bad luck. Regardless, it doesn’t change the fact that the entire mixture was tampered with. Had it gone out without anyone testing it first… hundreds could have been poisoned, suffering as she is now.”

A shiver of dread cascaded down Alexander’s spine, chilling him to the core.

“This could have spiraled into a regional disaster if it hadn’t been intercepted in time,” Oliver added, his voice grave.

“We must find that evidence. This cannot go unanswered or unpunished,” Alexander hissed, his determination hardening. “I want you to summon Fiona. I will confront her and attempt to extract a confession. Meanwhile, I need you to comb through her entire workspace. Every nook and cranny must be searched. Leave no stone unturned.”

As Fiona entered his office, Alexander observed her closely. This was not a space she frequented, and her discomfort was palpable. He settled into his wheelchair, adopting the same cold authority he always projected.

“You requested my presence?” she asked, her voice steady despite the tension in the air.

“Have a seat, Fiona.”

She complied, sitting stiffly in one of the chairs opposite him. He could see her trying to maintain her composure, her shoulders squared and her posture rigid.

“I’m curious, Fiona. As a licensed medical professional, can you enlighten me on the medicinal uses of a specific plant?”

“That would depend on the plant,” she replied, her tone laced with caution.

“Let’s say… Belladonna?”

At the mention of the name, Fiona’s body went rigid, and Alexander noted the telltale dilation of her pupils. A flicker of satisfaction surged within him; it was clear she was not as innocent as she pretended to be.

“B-Belladonna?” she stammered, her confidence faltering.

He struggled to suppress a grin; it was rare to see someone as proud as Fiona lose her composure so swiftly. She usually spoke with an air of superiority, yet now her words seemed to falter.

“Well?” he pressed, leaning forward slightly.
