The War God Alpha's Arranged Bride (Evelyn and Alexander) novel Chapter 71

**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 71: Sour Mood**

Alexander found himself precariously perched on the brink of madness. What the hell was happening? How had he almost revealed the truth to Evelyn, only to have it snatched away from him once more? It felt as though the universe conspired against him, preventing him from getting any closer to Evelyn—his own wife!

Frustration boiled within him, a bitter taste that lingered on his tongue. His jaw was clenched tightly, and his hands were balled into fists, trembling with pent-up emotion. He had no clue what sort of urgent call awaited him, demanding his immediate attention. With a stormy expression, he strode down the hallway toward his office, Oliver trailing closely behind him.

Oliver, ever the observant Beta, sensed the palpable tension radiating from Alexander. He hesitated, unsure whether to break the silence. Had their friendship not been as deep and enduring as it was, he might have felt genuine fear for his own safety.

Alexander was seething.

He understood better than anyone that Alexander had been searching for the perfect moment to unburden himself to Evelyn. This interruption was not intentional; it was a cruel twist of fate. While Alexander cherished his time with Evelyn, Oliver had taken it upon himself to manage all incoming calls, ensuring that nothing disrupted their precious moment.

Ever since the tea mixture had been tampered with, Oliver had painstakingly reached out to each buyer, informing them of the unforeseen mishap. Evelyn had expressed her gratitude, her eyes shining with appreciation as she prepared a new blend. In return, they received a flurry of callbacks, confirming updates and potential changes to orders. Yet, when that one phone call arrived, Oliver had anticipated it to be just another mundane customer inquiry. To his dismay, he discovered it was anything but.

It was Alexander’s Stepmother.

With her trademark air of entitlement, she demanded to speak with Alexander at once. Oliver, maintaining his composure, attempted to relay that Alexander was currently occupied and unable to take any calls.

Caroline was having none of it. Her voice dripped with impatience as she insisted Oliver find Alexander immediately.

“Surely the Alpha can spare a moment for his family,” she declared, her voice sharp and grating. “Your brother is finally taking a break from his studies and will be home for two weeks. It is only fitting that Alexander put on a welcoming face. So, find him!”

Oliver was likely the sole person who fully grasped the depth of Alexander’s resentment toward his younger brother. He never voiced his own opinions about the younger Kingston heir, but the tension was palpable whenever the two shared the same space.

“This had better be worth my time,” Alexander growled under his breath, irritation lacing his words.

“I’m just giving you a heads-up,” Oliver muttered, his voice low. “It’s Caroline.”

Alexander paused, his steps faltering ever so slightly. Caroline? What on earth could his Stepmother want? Was she trying to mend fences between him and Fiona? There was no doubt that after he had banished Fiona from his pack, she had run to Caroline, seeking some form of solace. If this phone call was indeed about that insufferable woman, Alexander contemplated the idea of tearing the landline out of the wall in frustration.

There was no way in hell that Fiona would ever be allowed back on his property. After her treachery, she should count herself lucky that he hadn’t reported her directly to the Royal Family. She deserved nothing less than a thorough psychological evaluation, perhaps even imprisonment.

As they entered the office, Alexander practically lunged for the phone, his impatience bubbling over. He inhaled deeply, attempting to summon whatever patience remained within him.

“What is it?” he asked, his voice taut, striving to keep his tone venom-free.
