**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 82: She Snapped**
**[Evelyn’s POV]**
“DON’T FUCKING TOUCH ME!!!”
The words erupted from my throat like a dam breaking, shattering the tense silence that had enveloped the entire house. It was as if time had frozen; everyone nearby halted in their tracks, their eyes wide with disbelief as they witnessed my desperate struggle to free myself from Oliver’s grasp.
I squirmed and twisted, my muscles protesting as I fought against his hold. Each movement sent a jolt of pain through my arms, but I was far too consumed by rage to care. Just then, I caught sight of Alexander rushing through the doorway, his expression a mixture of concern and urgency.
“Evelyn, stop!” he commanded, his voice cutting through the chaos.
But I was beyond listening. “Let me go!” I shouted, my voice laced with fury.
“What on earth is going on?” came a voice from the back of the room, followed closely by another, “What’s with all the noise?”
Wendy and Nina, two familiar faces, had arrived, their curiosity piqued by the commotion. My heart raced, panic clawing at my insides.
Oh God, why now?! As if I could possibly endure any more humiliation.
I didn’t want anyone to witness me in this state, a frayed mess of emotions. I was already reeling from the harsh words Alexander had hurled at me earlier. I couldn’t allow this moment of mortification to continue any longer.
With a surge of determination, I bent forward, summoning all my strength before snapping my head back with a forceful motion. I heard the sickening crunch as my forehead collided with Oliver’s nose. A rush of satisfaction coursed through me, despite the dull ache that blossomed in my own head.
“Ah! Goddamnit!” Oliver groaned, his hands instinctively flying to his face, blood seeping between his fingers as he tried to staunch the flow.
A flicker of regret might have crossed my mind, but it was quickly overshadowed by the realization that he was just as culpable for my emotional turmoil as Alexander was.
The room was now a tableau of shock and disbelief. Eyes widened in astonishment; they couldn’t fathom how someone like me could unleash such violence. The truth was, I had never acted out in such a way before. My entire life had been a careful orchestration of suppressing my feelings, burying them deep within.
But now, there was no denying it—I had reached my breaking point.
I couldn’t bear to look at anyone else, the shame bubbling just beneath the surface, threatening to spill over. The only person who deserved my anger was Alexander.
However, the moment my gaze met his, the floodgates opened. Tears blurred my vision, a torrent of emotions crashing over me. Amidst the fury, he unearthed the raw anguish that I had been keeping at bay.
“You…” I pointed a trembling finger at him, my voice trembling with pent-up fury. “You are the most horrible, despicable, cruel bastard I have ever met!!”
A collective gasp rippled through the onlookers. Alexander’s eyebrows shot up, his expression shifting from surprise to a narrowed glare. He opened his mouth, perhaps to defend himself, but I was quicker.
“Shut up! You’ve had your say; now it’s my turn!” I spat, my teeth clenched tightly together.
A sneer twisted my lips, filled with a mix of anger and disdain.
“I never intended to run into Michael at the market,” I hissed, my voice low but fierce. “He saw me in the crowd and came over.”
Alexander had the audacity to scoff, disbelief etched across his features. “You expect me to believe that you two just happened to bump into each other again?”
