**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 95: Cold Realizations**
In the dim light of his study, Alexander meticulously sifted through the messages from Wendy, each word laden with concern as she detailed the troubling situation surrounding Evelyn and her family. A wry smile crept onto his face as he recalled his grandmother’s humorous yet pointed remarks about the rude behavior of his in-laws. Yet, beneath the surface of amusement, a heavy anxiety weighed on his heart for Evelyn.
Wendy had shared the emotional upheaval that had engulfed Evelyn as she read through the letter he had penned. A flicker of relief washed over him, knowing that he had managed to express his feelings to her, even if it was just a fleeting moment before their paths diverged. However, that flicker quickly dimmed as he absorbed the news of Evelyn’s brother’s deteriorating condition. The toll it was taking on Evelyn’s mental state was particularly alarming.
“The girl is running herself ragged, trying to figure out what could have possibly gone wrong. I’m worried for her, Alexander,” Wendy had said, her voice thick with concern.
He understood all too well that if the Alpha had any knowledge of his wife’s struggles, Evelyn would not rest until she unearthed a solution to the chaos surrounding them. Wendy’s worry was justified, and now it had morphed into his own.
He and Oliver had delved deeper into their investigation than they initially expected. After a thorough examination, they had uncovered a chilling reality: the brakes on Evelyn’s brother’s car had been deliberately severed. To compound the horror, all communication devices within the vehicle had been rendered useless.
The implications of this wreckage screamed foul play.
“Can you recall any details from when the car was brought here? Perhaps a conversation or a description of the individuals involved?” Oliver inquired, his tone steady but urgent.
Their contact was a seasoned worker from the junkyard, a man who appeared to be in his fifties and seemed to be savoring the early days of retirement. The man took a moment to ponder Oliver’s questions, his brow furrowing in concentration.
“Wait,” Alexander interjected, a spark of inspiration lighting his eyes. “I have something that might jog your memory.”
He fished out a recent photograph from the inner pocket of his jacket, the image capturing a moment with his parents and Michael, all smiles and warmth.
“Do either of these two look familiar to you?” he asked, holding the picture out.
Without missing a beat, the man nodded emphatically. “Oh, yes, I recognize him.”
“Are you absolutely certain?” Oliver pressed, leaning in closer, his eyes narrowing.
“There’s no way I could forget that guy,” the man replied, pointing to Michael’s face in the photograph. “He was definitely here. He came with a woman, but she hardly moved. Mostly, she stayed in the car while he was busy chatting with another guy who met them here.”
A cold shiver ran down Alexander’s spine. He exchanged a glance with Oliver, both of them grappling with the same sense of dread.
What did he mean by ‘another guy’?
As far as Alexander knew, this whole incident had been a personal vendetta orchestrated by Michael, who was not known for trusting others. The thought that he would involve anyone else in his dark schemes was unfathomable.
“Can you remember anything about this third person?” Alexander asked, his voice steady despite the turmoil within.
The man scratched his head, a look of frustration crossing his features. “He wore a black leather jacket with some kind of emblem on the sleeve.”
An emblem? That piqued Alexander’s interest.
“Was there anything distinctive about the emblem?” he probed further, his curiosity ignited.
“It might have had a small sword and a shield with a cross on it,” the man described, his voice wavering slightly.
A surge of fury welled up within Alexander. The man was innocent in this, deserving only respect for his honesty. No, his wrath was directed at the emblem itself.
