The War God Alpha's Arranged Bride (Evelyn and Alexander) novel Chapter 99

**Steps Along Forgotten Roads**
**By Sophia Reed**
**Chapter 99: Devious Workings**

Isabella stood in the dimly lit room, her heart racing with a mix of excitement and malice. Unlike her oblivious husband, she was acutely aware of the tensions simmering just beneath the surface. The arrival of this Michael character was an unwelcome complication, one she had no desire to entertain. Who was he, anyway? A mere distraction, she thought, as her mind whirled with the implications of Evelyn’s sudden presence, which had derailed her meticulously crafted plans to dispose of Edward. The more she thought about it, the more she realized that Evelyn now posed a threat that needed to be eliminated.

As she observed Michael’s lingering gaze on Evelyn, a wicked plan began to take shape in her mind. A plan that could potentially shatter Evelyn’s reputation and devastate her marriage.

Isabella concealed her sinister grin behind the rim of her glass, the cool surface of the crystal a stark contrast to the fiery thoughts igniting within her. She pondered the possibilities of the aphrodisiac Samantha had procured. Had she even had a chance to use it on Edward yet? The uncertainty gnawed at her; she had no way of knowing how potent the drug was or how swiftly its effects would manifest. But why not experiment with Evelyn? She could easily observe the results from a safe distance.

The prospect of getting close to her stepdaughter, however, was daunting. Evelyn was often sequestered in her brother’s room, lost in her own world, making it challenging for Isabella to devise a method to administer the drug. Yet, it was imperative that she found a way.

She had come too far, too close to seizing the life she had always envisioned. Soon, she would welcome her son into the world, and with him, the power to control the Silverwood pack would finally be within her grasp. Once Evelyn became too entangled in her own chaotic life, removing Edward from the equation would prove to be a trivial matter.

All Isabella needed to do was wait patiently for the right moment to strike. Once the aphrodisiac coursed through Evelyn’s veins, the girl would be unable to govern her own thoughts, let alone her actions.

Meanwhile, Alexander was grappling with a tumultuous mix of emotions. The shocking revelations that had surfaced left him unsettled, yet he felt a sense of progress in his own endeavors. The initial disbelief had faded, and the reality of his situation began to crystallize. He had always known he was on the Alpha King’s radar, and it was hardly surprising that the king would attempt to eliminate a potential threat.

Surviving that car crash had undoubtedly stirred the pot for everyone involved, including the king himself. It was becoming increasingly clear why the king had been so adamant about Alexander marrying.

Little did they realize that he had been paired with one of the most astute and capable women in the entire region. Alexander had every faith that Evelyn possessed the potential to match his own skills. He envisioned training her to become an exceptional fighter and an even more formidable strategist, just as he was. Evelyn had the tenacity and spirit to excel, just as she had demonstrated with her etiquette lessons. There was no doubt in his mind that she would rise to the occasion.

The mere thought of their future together—a dynamic duo, capable of conquering any challenge—filled him with anticipation. He longed to return home and resume the connection they had forged. Evelyn had occupied his thoughts incessantly since their parting, and he could only hope she was effectively aiding her brother in whatever crisis had befallen him.

If anyone could work miracles when it came to health and well-being, it was undoubtedly Evelyn.

Yet, a sense of unease settled in his gut as he realized he hadn’t received any updates from his grandmother since the previous day. He tried to dismiss the nagging worry, but the feeling persisted, gnawing at him.

“After this, we should head to Evelyn’s family home,” he suggested to Oliver, his Beta, who nodded in agreement without hesitation.

After a brief conversation with one of the managers at the junkyard, they were directed to a nearby mechanic shop. Initially, Alexander and Oliver were puzzled by the relevance of this detour, but the old man’s insistence piqued their curiosity.

“Trust me,” he had urged. “The answers you seek are at Matteo’s. He’s been running that shop for years, and a couple of months ago, we met at a bar. He was in a state of distress that night. After a few drinks, he confided in me about a bizarre customer who insisted he remove the brake lines from his car. I have a strong feeling these incidents are linked.”

Alexander felt a sense of urgency; they had to investigate this mechanic shop and speak with Matteo.

This was a promising lead, one that warranted their attention. They expressed their gratitude to the manager and inquired if he would be willing to testify should the case escalate to court. He agreed without a moment’s hesitation.
