Lila didn’t wait for an answer.

She walked past them, her steps measured, her expression unreadable. The air felt heavy-like every word that had been said had shifted the atmosphere in the house.
She headed straight for the guest room, her mind already bracing for the next blow.
But when she opened the door, she froze.
Her things were gone.
The room was bare. The bed was made neatly, the floor swept clean. Everything that had been hers-the books, the personal items, the little pieces of her life-had vanished as if she’d never been there.
Dina stood in the middle of the room, a broom in her hand, her face calm but guarded. She looked up as Lila entered.
“Mrs. Blackthorne,” she said softly. “I was told to clean the room.”
Lila’s voice was quiet, controlled. “By who?”
Dina’s eyes flicked toward the doorway. “Mr. Blackthorne.”
Lila felt the air go thin.
“And where are my things?” she asked, her tone sharp now.
“They were moved,” Dina replied, hesitant. “To the master bedroom.”
Lila turned slowly.
Damon was already standing in the hallway, as if he’d been waiting there the entire time. His posture was relaxed, but his eyes were hard-calculated.
“Maddy’s apartment is under renovation,” he said smoothly, as though offering a simple explanation. “So she’ll be staying here for a while.”
Lila stared at him, a wave of disgust rising in her chest.
She didn’t speak.
She didn’t argue.
She simply turned and walked out of the villa.
The night air hit her like a slap-cool, sharp, real.
She moved away from the house, from the life that had tried to keep her in place. Each step felt like a choice.

And in that moment, Lila understood the truth clearly:
This was no longer a home.
It was a cage.

Lila didn’t slow down until the villa was a distant memory behind her. The road blurred beneath the tires, the city lights flashing in and out like fleeting thoughts. Her hands gripped the steering wheel until her knuckles whitened, and for the first time in hours, she realized she hadn’t fully processed what she’d just lost.
When she arrived at Ina’s place, she stepped out of the car and smoothed the red dress she was wearing-the same one she’d worn last time, the one that had made her feel powerful, alive. It clung to her curves, bold and bright against the night, as if she were daring the world to look at her.
Ina opened the door before she even knocked, eyes widening at the sight of her friend.
“Lila,” she said, startled. “What are you doing here?”
Lila walked in, her heels clicking against the floor. She didn’t look like a woman who’d come for comfort. She looked like a woman who’d come for something else.
“I need you to come with me,” Lila said, voice steady. “Tonight. We’re spending the night in the bar.”
Ina blinked. “Why?”
Lila held Ina’s gaze, then added, “We’re celebrating. My PhD journey.”
Ina’s mouth twisted into a half-smile. “A mini celebration?” she repeated, skeptical. “And why the sudden urge to go bar hopping?”
She stepped closer, her tone sharpening. “Jealous of Maddy always being around Damon? Now you can’t take it because he brought her into your villa?”
Lila’s eyes snapped up, and she shot Ina a stare-cold, unyielding.
Ina held her gaze for a moment, then tilted her head, her voice low. “Are you…. in love with Damon?”
Lila hesitated.
The question hit harder than she expected, as if it had reached the part of her she was still trying to deny. Her throat tightened.
“No,” she said firmly, forcing the word out.
Her voice was steady, but the certainty in it was not absolute. It was a choice she was making in that moment –not a truth she was fully convinced of, but a line she refused to cross in front of anyone.
Ina’s eyes softened slightly, as if she understood more than Lila wanted to admit. “Then why are you acting like this?”
Lila didn’t answer.

Instead, she turned toward the door, the red dress catching the light, and in her silence there was a message that needed no words:
Tonight, she would reclaim something.
Even if she didn’t yet know what it was.
Lila’s eyes narrowed, and she leaned in slightly, her voice low and sharp.
“I would never love a man like Damon,” she said, each word deliberate. “A man who sleeps around like a dog.”
Ina laughed, a short, surprised sound. “Well, at least you’re honest.”
They stepped into the bar together, and the room seemed to shift. The lights were dim, the music low and heavy, and several men glanced their way as they passed. The red dress drew attention, but Lila didn’t look for it-she didn’t need it. She simply moved with the confidence of someone who had decided she would not be invisible anymore.
They took seats at the bar.
The bartender slid menus toward them as if he’d been waiting all night.
“Two drinks,” Lila said, not looking at the menu. “Different kinds.”
Ina raised an eyebrow but smiled. “Sure. Let’s make it a night.”
As they settled in, the atmosphere pulsed around them-laughter, clinking glasses, the low hum of conversation. Lila let herself relax into it, letting the world blur around her.
Meanwhile, somewhere else in the bar, the manager’s voice cut through the air.
“Mr. White,” he said quietly, leaning close. “Mrs. Blackthorne is here.”
James’s eyes flicked toward the entrance, and he saw Lila and Ina at the bar. His gaze sharpened, then softened into irritation as he looked back toward Damon-already a few drinks in, his expression dark and
tense.
Damon’s posture was rigid, his jaw tight. He was clearly annoyed, and James knew exactly why.
He leaned closer to Damon and spoke casually, masking the edge in his tone. “There’s a beautiful woman at the bar,” he said. “Want to go check her out?”
Damon blinked, confused. “What do you mean?” he asked, the question sharp. “There’s already a woman sitting in my lap, serving me drinks.”
James’s eyes widened for a fraction of a second-then he recovered, forcing a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
“Right,” he said. “But she’s not the kind of woman I meant.”
Damon’s expression hardened.

Something in his tone made it clear: he didn’t like being questioned. He didn’t like being challenged. And he certainly didn’t like the implication that there was something else in the room he should be paying attention
The bar continued to pulse around them, but for Damon, the air had suddenly turned tight—like a leash being pulled.
