Mark and Lila stared at the man, who now sat comfortably as if he owned the place.
“What do you gain from taking us?” Lila asked, her posture relaxing slightly-calculated, controlled.
The man’s eyes glinted. “Because,” he said smoothly, “you both belong to me.”
Lila didn’t respond. She simply held his gaze, unreadable.
“Oh, come on,” he added with a teasing sigh. “You’re breaking this old man’s heart.”
Marlou stepped forward. “Are you with Mr. Bjorn?”
The man’s expression shifted, amusement fading into something sharper.
“Mr. Bjorn?” he repeated with a scoff. “You mean that bastard Eric?”
“Yes,” Marlou pressed. “He’s been hunting Lila. Is he your boss too?”
The man let out a low chuckle, leaning back. “Boss?” he echoed. “Let’s just say… Eric is my cute little puppy.”
The room fell silent at his words.
“Come with me,” he continued, his tone light but insistent. “And I’ll tell you everything.”
Mark remained still, but Lila tilted her head slightly, a faint smirk forming. “And how do we trust you? What if you’re just Eric’s little kitten?”
For a moment, the man said nothing-then his smile widened, amused rather than offended.
“Oh… you really are like your mother,” he said.
Mark and Lila’s brows knitted.
Mother?
The word echoed in Lila’s mind, but her expression remained calm, betraying nothing.
The man stood slowly, adjusting his coat. “Let’s just say… I’m your beloved uncle,” he said casually. Then his gaze hardened slightly. “And you two should never get close to Damon.”
His eyes lingered on Lila.
“Especially you,” he added. “You should really divorce him.”
Lila’s chest tightened, but she stayed silent.
“That family…” the man continued, his voice dropping, “killed your parents.”

Before anyone could respond, he turned and walked toward the door.
“I’ll be waiting for your answer,” he said without looking back.
And then-he was gone.
Silence filled the room, heavy and suffocating.
Lila stood frozen, her thoughts spiraling, one question echoing louder than the rest-
What did he mean… uncle?
The door clicked shut.
Silence lingered-thick, suffocating.
For a moment, no one moved.
Then Marlou exhaled sharply. “That… that was insane.”
Mark didn’t respond. His eyes were still fixed on the door, his jaw clenched, his mind racing through every word the man had said.
Lila remained frozen.
That family… killed your parents.
The words echoed again and again, louder each time.
“No,” she whispered under her breath, shaking her head slightly. “That doesn’t make sense…”
Mark turned to her immediately. “Lila.”
“I grew up knowing what happened,” she continued, her voice trembling now. “It was an accident… that’s what they told me. It was always an accident.”
Marlou frowned. “And you believed them?”
Lila didn’t answer.
Because now-she wasn’t sure anymore.
Mark stepped closer, his voice gentler. “Look at me.”
She did.’
“We don’t take his words at face value,” Mark said firmly. “He wants something from us. That means he’ll say anything to shake you.”

Marlou stood behind him, arms crossed. “You really think something that big could stay hidden?”
Mark didn’t look up. “Not hidden,” he replied. “Just… buried well enough that no one asks questions.”

Lila sat quietly, watching the screen but not really seeing it. Her mind was elsewhere-stuck on fragments of
memory.
A house.
Laughter.
Then-sirens.
‘Fire.
Her breath caught.
“Lila?” Mark’s voice pulled her back.
“I remember something,” she said slowly. “The night our parents died… there were people there before the fire spread.”
Marlou frowned. “People?”
She nodded. “I was young, but I remember voices arguing. It wasn’t just an accident…” Her hands tightened. “Someone was there.”
Mark’s typing slowed. “That changes everything.”
Just then, a file opened on the screen.
Mark’s eyes narrowed. “Got something.”
Both Lila and Marlou moved closer.
“It’s an old financial record,” Mark explained. “One of Damon’s family companies… but look at this.” He pointed at the screen. “A large transaction, dated the same night your parents died.”
Lila’s heart started pounding. “What does that mean?”
“It means,” Mark said quietly, “someone got paid.”
Silence crashed over them.
Marlou let out a low curse. “So it wasn’t just murder… it was planned.”
Lila felt her knees weaken, but she forced herself to stay standing. “Who?” she whispered.
Mark scrolled further, his expression darkening. “The account it was sent to… it’s been wiped. Completely untraceable.”

Marlou shook his head. “Convenient.”

Mark leaned back slightly, thinking. “Not completely,” he muttered. “Whoever did this… they left a pattern.”
Lila looked at him. “What kind of pattern?”
Mark’s gaze lifted to meet hers.
“The same pattern I saw… when I broke into that network.”
A chill ran down Marlou’s spine. “You’re saying-”
“Yes,” Mark cut in. “Whoever’s behind that network… is connected to our parents’ death.”
Lila’s breath hitched.
Which meant-
The man who called himself her uncle…
Might not have been lying.
The room fell silent again, but this time it wasn’t confusion filling the air-
It was something far more dangerous.
Truth.
And they had just taken their first real step toward it.
