Chapter 191
Chapter 191
The television in Lila’s café no longer felt like background noise.
It felt like an eye.
Watching.
Unblinking.
“…and Wago City’s newly elected mayor, Daven Foster, continues to receive nationwide attention as the architect of what analysts are calling a ‘controlled economic revival,” the anchor said smoothly. “Residents describe a sudden decline in crime, rapid infrastructure expansion, and an unusually stable political environment…”
The footage cut to crowds cheering beneath banners bearing his name.
Daven Foster.
Smiling.
Waving.
Perfectly composed.
Too composed.
Lila stood behind the counter, her hands frozen mid-task. The cup she had been holding slipped slightly before she caught it again.
“…Daven Foster…” she murmured under her breath.
The name didn’t feel like memory anymore.
It felt like a warning.
From the corner of the café, Ina turned slowly from her seat. Her expression was unreadable, but her eyes were sharp-too focused on the screen.
“So he’s alive,” Ina said quietly.
Not relief.
Not surprise.
Just confirmation.
Mark sat near the window, the light from outside cutting across his face in thin, uneven lines. He didn’t look at the television right away. Instead, he watched the reflection of it in the glass.
Daven’s face flickered across the pane like a ghost trapped between worlds.
“I already checked the registry office in Wago City,” Mark said at last.
His voice was calm.
Too calm..
“He’s listed as single.”
Lila’s fingers tightened around the counter.
Single.
As if the rest of his life had been erased clean,
“He arrived there alone,” Mark continued. “No family records, No attachments. Just… appeared.”
Ina tilted her head slightly. “And no one questioned that?”
Mark finally looked at her.
“They did,” he said. “At first.”

A pause.
Then-
“He made sure they stopped.”
The air in the café shifted.
Subtle.
But noticeable.
Like the room itself had leaned closer to listen.
Mark continued, lowering his voice slightly.
“He started as nothing. Not official. Not recognized. Just someone solving disputes. Paying for repairs. Funding projects. Fixing things that weren’t supposed to be fixable that quickly.”
Lila frowned. “That doesn’t sound like politics.”
“No,” Mark agreed.
“It sounds like control,” Ina finished.
No one spoke for a moment.
Just once.
Then steadied.
On the television, the anchor smiled wider.
“Mayor Foster has also promised full protection for investors entering Wago City. Sources say several major companies are already relocating operations there…”
Mark’s gaze sharpened.
“That’s new,” he said quietly.
Ina glanced at him. “What is?”
“The speed,” he replied. “This isn’t normal influence. It’s acceleration. Like everything is being pushed forward too fast to question.”
Lila swallowed. “Why would anyone do that?”
Mark didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he watched the screen again.
Daven was now shown walking through a newly built district. The camera angle was slightly off, as if it had been taken without permission. People stood at a distance, watching him pass.
No one came too close.
No one interrupted.
And yet-
Every person in frame seemed to unconsciously lean toward him.
Like gravity didn’t belong to the city anymore.
It belonged to him.
“I’ll keep checking on Wago City,” Mark said finally. “From time to time.”
Ina nodded once. “And if something changes?”
Mark hesitated.
Then-
“I’ll know.”

Days passed.
But something about them felt wrong.
Not dramatic.
Not obvious.
Just… slightly misaligned.
Like reality itself had shifted a few millimeters off center.
Mark began his master’s program.
He attended lectures. Took notes. Spoke to professors.
From the outside, everything looked normal.
But sometimes-
In the middle of a lecture hall-
He would notice something strange.
A student in the corner staring too long without blinking.
A professor pausing mid-sentence, as if forgetting what they were about to say.
A phone vibrating on a desk with no visible notification.
Small things.
Easy to ignore.
Until they weren’t.
At night, Mark would wake up for no reason.
No sound.
No nightmare.
Just the feeling that someone had been in the room a moment before he opened his eyes.
Once, he even swore he saw his phone light up on its own.
No message.
Just a blank screen glowing softly before fading.
He stopped telling himself it was exhaustion.
That excuse no longer worked.
Ina noticed it first.
“You’re not sleeping,” she said one evening.
Mark didn’t deny it.
“I am,” he replied.
Ina gave him a look.
A long one.
“You’re lying badly,” she said.
Mark almost smiled.
Almost.
But then his gaze drifted past her shoulder-toward the café window.
There.

A reflection.
Not his.
Not Ina’s.
Something else.
For half a second-
Just a fraction of a second-
There was a figure behind them.
Standing still.
Too still.
Mark turned sharply.
Nothing.
Only the empty street outside.
But his heartbeat didn’t slow.
Ina followed his gaze. “What is it?”
“… Nothing,” Mark said.
But his voice didn’t match the word.
That night, the television in Lila’s café turned on by itself.
No one touched it.
No one was there.
Just static.
Then-
Daven’s face appeared again.
Not in an interview.
Not in news coverage.
Just… looking directly into the camera.
As if he was already inside the room.
“Wago City is entering a new era,” the broadcast said.
But the voice wasn’t the anchor’s.
It was deeper.
Calmer.
More intimate.
Like it was spoken from inside the speakers themselves.
Lila froze in her room above the café.
The door was locked.
She was sure of it.
Still-
The television continued.
“We are building something safe,” the voice said. “Something stable.”
A pause.

Then-.
“And safety requires… removal of uncertainty.”
The screen flickered.
For a split second-
Daven’s smile widened.
Too wide.
Not natural.
Lila stepped back slowly.
Her breath caught in her throat.
The television shut off.
Silence returned.
But it didn’t feel empty anymore.
It felt occupied.
Far away, in Wago City, the mayor’s office lights were still on.
Daven stood alone at the window.
The city below was quiet.
Perfectly quiet.
Too quiet.
Behind him, a phone rang once.
Then stopped.
No one else was in the room.
And yet-
Daven smiled slightly.
As if he had just been told something amusing.
“They’re starting to notice,” he said softly.
No reply came.
But he didn’t expect one.
Outside, the city lights flickered in sequence.
One by one.
Like something breathing.’
Slow.
Controlled.
Alive.
Daven placed his hand against the glass.
And for à brief moment-
The reflection behind him did not match his movement.
It smiled a second later than he did.
Almost like it was learning.
Almost like it wasn’t him at all.

And somewhere far beyond Wago City-
Something unseen continued to spread.
Quietly.
Patiently.
Like a thought that refuses to leave.
