The Wife He Never Meant to Love (Lila and Damon) novel Chapter 209

Chapter 209

Chapter 209

Lila slipped quietly into the room where Damon lay.

The air was cold, filled only with the soft hum and steady beeping of machines that kept him alive.

She closed the door behind her and walked slowly to the bed.

Without hesitation, she lay down beside him, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

“Damon… wake up,” she murmured, her voice low and coaxing. “I brought you a present.”

She tilted her head, studying his unmoving face.

“If you open those damn eyes of yours,” she added softly, “I’ll give you anything you want.”

Silence answered her.

Only the machines responded-cold, mechanical, indifferent.

Lila let out a quiet breath, her gaze darkening.

“Why do you always end up like this, huh?” she whispered, brushing a strand of hair away from his pale face.

Her fingers lingered.

“You used to say death couldn’t even catch up to you….” A faint, bitter smile touched her lips. “And now look at you.”

She leaned closer.

“You’re clearly at its mercy.”

Her voice dropped to almost nothing.

“You really do talk big.”

She shifted slightly, settling beside him more comfortably, her eyes tracing every detail of his face.

He looked too still.

Too perfect.

“You know…” she murmured, her tone turning softer, more dangerous, “you look better with your eyes open… looking at me.”

Her fingers drifted down, tracing the length of his forearm slowly, possessively.

“Damian wants to meet you,” she continued. “I already asked Ina to bring him to the estate… so he can stay with his grandmother.”

A pause.

“Your mother asked about him,” Lila added, her voice sharpening just slightly. “But you… you never did. Not

even once.”

Her touch slowed.

“It’s really hard, you know…” she said quietly. “For you to just say it. That you need me. That you can’t breathe without me.”

Her fingers tightened slightly around his arm.

“How am I supposed to know you truly love me…” she whispered, her voice trembling between anger and longing, “when all you ever do is look at me coldly… and push me away?”

She exhaled shakily.

Then softened again.

Her hand continued tracing his skin, more gently now.

“You’re getting thinner…” she murmured. ”

Lila leaned in and pressed a soft, lingering kiss against his cheek.

And stayed there-

As if waiting.

Hoping.

Or refusing to let go.

Lila fell asleep beside Damon, her hand still resting lightly against his arm.

For a moment, the room felt almost peaceful.

When she woke, the sunlight was already slipping through the curtains.

Morning.

She blinked, disoriented, then slowly pushed herself up. Her eyes immediately went to Damon.

Unmoving.

Exactly the same.

Lila stared at him for a long second, then let out a dry breath.

“Not even hard in the morning,” she muttered under her breath, shaking her head slightly.

She leaned closer, her gaze turning serious.

“Just so you know…” she whispered, her voice firm despite the softness, “I won’t let death take you.”

With that, she stood and left the room.

The rest of the day was relentless.

Work piled up, one task after another. Calls, decisions, signatures-everything that Damon would have handled now rested on her shoulders.

Beside her stood Bryan, efficient as always, placing document after document in front of her.

They couldn’t let anyone know.

Damon’s condition had to remain a secret.

No weakness.

No cracks.

They would protect him-no matter what.

Bryan dropped another stack onto her desk.

Lila groaned, leaning back slightly. “Oh, come on, Bryan. Give me a break.”

Bryan smirked.

“Well,” he said lightly, “the queen must stand while the king is out there fighting for his life,”

Lila raised an eyebrow-then laughed.

“Did you just call me queen?”

“If the crown fits,” Bryan replied.

They both laughed, the tension easing, if only for a moment.

After a while, Bryan glanced at the time. “Do you want to eat lunch here, or in the kitchen?”

“Let’s eat there,” Lila said, standing up and stretching slightly.

They stepped out into the hallway-

Just as her phone rang.

Lila glanced at the screen.

Chapter 209 Damian..

Her expression softened instantly.

She answered and switched to video call.

Damian’s face filled the screen, bright and full of excitement.

“Hi, sweetie,” Lila said, smiling warmly.

“Mom!” Damian beamed. “Grandma’s garden is so huge! And there’s a lake! We had a picnic under a willow tree!”

He turned the camera, showing the tree swaying gently in the breeze.

“Look! Isn’t it nice?”

Lila’s smile softened.

“It’s beautiful.”

“Mom…” Damian said, his voice dropping just a little. “I wish you were here. And Dad too.”

Lila’s chest tightened-but she didn’t let it show.

“We will be, sweetheart,” she said gently. “We’ll see you soon, okay? For now, behave yourself. Don’t make . Grandma angry.”

“Okay!” Damian nodded quickly.

A voice chimed in from the side.

“Oh dear, Damian is such a good boy,” Margaret said warmly. “I suppose he got that from you.”

Damian grinned proudly. “See? Grandma said I’m a good kid!”

Lila chuckled softly. “Yes, you are.”

They talked a little longer-small, warm moments that felt like a different world entirely.

Then the call ended.

The screen went dark.

Reality settled back in.

Bryan looked at her quietly for a second, then gave a small nod.

“Come on,” he said gently. “Let’s eat.”

Lila slipped her phone into her pocket and exhaled.

“Yeah,” she said. “Let’s go.”

But even as she walked beside him-

Her thoughts were still in that room.

With Damon.

Waiting.

Lila sat back in her chair, her fingers resting lightly against the armrest as her mind raced.

Everything felt wrong.

Too many pieces didn’t fit.

“I’m sure Daven is behind this,” she said slowly, her eyes narrowing. “But he’s not the main player.”

Bryan, standing across from her desk, nodded.

“Bryan,” Lila continued, her gaze sharpening, “what did Daven want to tell Damon when he asked to meet him?”

Bryan exhaled, crossing his arms slightly as he gathered his thoughts.

Chapter 209

“Daven became Damon’s eyes in Wago,” he began. “When Damon stayed in the South, Daven reported everything-movements, alliances, any development involving the Bjorn family.”

He paused briefly.

“Until the Bjorn Empire collapsed… it was like Damon never really left. He had someone watching everything for him while he was busy cleaning up Foster Technology.”

Lila let out a quiet, unimpressed scoff.

“And Damon agreed to meet him in person just because of that?” she said coldly. “Pathetic.”

Bryan didn’t argue.

“Daven asked for Damon’s support in the upcoming election,” he said. “And Damon took the bait.”

His jaw tightened.

“He didn’t see the trap.”

A flicker of frustration crossed Bryan’s face.

“I should have pulled him out before they opened fire,” he added quietly.

Lila looked up at him, her expression softening-just a little.

“It’s not your fault,” she said.

Then her gaze hardened again.

“Damon walked straight into that trap,” she continued. “He should have known better. Daven was never loyal to

him.”

Her voice dropped, filled with restrained anger.

“Daven has always played dirty.”

She stood slowly, pacing a few steps.

“I just can’t believe Damon trusted him,” she said. “Even knowing Daven was the one who took Maddy out of that mental institution.”

Bryan frowned slightly.

“Damon has been tracking them ever since Daven helped Maddy escape,” he said. “He’s been following every move.”

He shook his head.

“I just don’t know what got into him… agreeing to meet Daven like that.”

A heavy silence followed.

“Daven doesn’t even know,” Bryan added, his voice quieter now, “that Damon already knows the truth.”

Lila stopped walking.

Slowly, a dangerous realization settled in her expression.

“So Damon knew…” she murmured.

Her eyes darkened.

“And he still went.”

She let out a cold breath.

“Then this wasn’t just a meeting.”

Her gaze lifted to Bryan-sharp, calculating,

“This was a game.”

“And Daven thinks he’s the one in control.”

A faint, chilling smile touched her lips.
