Chapter 248
Chapter 248
Damian had not guessed.
He had seen.
That was the difference.
While the adults were busy managing crises, building alibis, and weaving explanations, Damian had quietly
done what none of them thought to check-he had gone back to the island, not physically, but through the one thing people always underestimated:
Access.
The old house on the island still had its security system intact. Outdated by corporate standards, perhaps- but not to a mind like Damian’s. With time, patience, and a stubborn kind of curiosity, he had managed to reconnect to the system remotely.
At first, it had been simple curiosity.
Now, it was something else entirely.
The tablet rested on the desk in front of him, its glow reflecting faintly in his eyes as he watched the live feed. The angle wasn’t perfect, but it was enough. Enough to see the neighboring house clearly.
The house where Marlou and Jenny lived.
The house where Damon had been seen.
Damian leaned forward slightly, his attention fixed, unblinking. Every movement on the screen mattered. Every shadow, every door opening, every figure passing through the frame-he absorbed all of it.
Beside him, Ethan stood quietly, arms crossed, shifting his weight from one foot to another. He had been there the entire time, watching with Damian, even if he didn’t fully understand everything they were seeing.
Or maybe… he understood just enough.
“Damian…” Ethan said softly, eyes still glued to the screen. “Maybe we’re wrong.”
No response.
Damian didn’t even blink.
Ethan hesitated, then continued, “Maybe he really is working on something. Something important. Maybe… maybe this is part of it.”
Still nothing.
“He could be pretending,” Ethan added, trying to make sense of it. “You know… to get information. To get close to them.”
That idea sounded better.
Safer.
Easier to accept.
“Maybe we shouldn’t rush into judging him,” Ethan said.
The room fell quiet again, filled only with the faint hum of the tablet.
Damian’s expression didn’t change.
But something in his eyes hardened.
Because what he saw-
what he had been seeing-
didn’t feel like pretending.
It felt… normal.

Too normal.
And that was what bothered him most.
“I don’t think he’s pretending,” Damian said finally, his voice low.
Ethan swallowed.
“You don’t know that,” he said quickly.
“I know patterns,” Damian replied.
That again.
Patterns.
Ethan didn’t argue further.
Because he didn’t have anything stronger than hope to counter it.
And hope… wasn’t holding up very well against what they were watching.
Then-
the faint hum of a car echoed from outside.
Both boys froze.
Damian’s head snapped toward the window. Without a word, he reached out and turned off the tablet. The screen went dark instantly.
“Go,” he said.
They moved at the same time.
Fast.
Down the stairs, through the hallway, and into the foyer. They stopped just inside, careful, controlled.
From where they stood, they could see through the glass panels of the front door.
A car had just pulled in.
Lila stepped out, assisted by Bryan.
Damian’s posture shifted slightly.
Ethan let out a small breath of relief.
“Thank you, Bryan,” Lila said as she steadied herself. “Go home and rest.”
Bryan nodded before returning to the car.
The moment Lila opened the door-
“Mom!”
The boys spoke in perfect sync.
Lila barely had time to react before they were rushing toward her, wrapping their arms around her.
Her heart softened instantly.
All the exhaustion she carried-the long day, the stress, the weight of everything-seemed to melt away in that
moment.
“My boys…” she murmured, smiling as they kissed her cheeks,
Warm.
Safe.
Uncomplicated.
Or at least… it seemed that way.
They guided her gently toward the living room, almost as if they had rehearsed it.

“Sit, Mom,” Damian said.
Ethan was already moving, quickly bringing her slippers and kneeling to place them carefully on her feet.
“Are you tired?” Ethan asked as he sat beside her.
Damian stood behind the sofa, his hands resting lightly on her shoulders before beginning to massage them.
“I asked the staff to prepare dinner,” Damian added.
Lila blinked, a little surprised.
Then she smiled.
“Mom is no longer tired,” she said softly.
And she meant it.
Looking at them like this-
so attentive, so caring-
she felt something warm settle in her chest.
“I have good news, boys,” she said.
That caught their attention immediately.
Both Damian and Ethan looked at her, eyes bright with curiosity.
Lila’s smile widened.
“We’re going to the island,” she said. “Bryan already arranged the boat.”
Her voice carried excitement.
Hope.
Relief.
“It’s amazing, isn’t it?”
But the reaction she expected-
never came.
Instead-
the boys froze.
It was subtle.
Almost unnoticeable.
But Lila saw it.
The way their bodies stiffened.
The way their eyes flickered.
The way their smiles… didn’t quite form.
And in that instant-
something in her shifted.
“Why?” she asked gently. “What’s wrong?”
She pulled them closer, wrapping her arms around both of them.
“Didn’t you want to go back to the island?”
Silence.
A brief glance passed between Damian and Ethan.
It was quick.
But intentional.

Damian moved first.
“Mom…” he said softly, lowering his gaze slightly. “I feel bad for Grandma.”
Lila blinked.
That wasn’t the response she expected.
Damian looked at Ethan.
And Ethan understood immediately.
“Mom… Grandma will be alone,” Ethan added. “In this big house… she’ll be lonely.”
Lila hesitated.
The words sank in.
Because they weren’t wrong.
Margaret… alone in the estate.
The thought had crossed her mind before.
“We can bring Grandma with us,” Lila said.
It seemed like the obvious solution.
But again-
the boys reacted quickly.
“But Mom…” Ethan said, his voice gentle. “Grandma is old. She gets tired easily.”
Damian nodded in agreement.
“And we can stay here with her,” he added. “Also… I don’t want to leave my friends.”
That part was true.
Or at least… believable.
“We just got used to school here,” Damian continued. “If we move again… we’ll have to start over.”
Lila looked at them both.
Really looked.
And something flickered inside her.
Guilt.
Understanding.
They had already adjusted so much.
From the estate…
to the city…
to a new school…
new people…
new routines,
Children adapted quickly.
But that didn’t mean it was easy.
She tightened her arms around them slightly.
“I didn’t think about that,” she admitted quietly.
Damian rested his head lightly against her shoulder.
Ethan leaned into her side.
And in that moment-

they felt like children again.
Not investigators.
Not observers.
Not players in a game they weren’t supposed to be part of.
Just… children.
“Okay,” Lila said softly.
Both boys stilled.
“We’ll stay here,” she continued. “Whatever you two want.”
Relief passed between them-silent, but strong.
Lila smiled and kissed the top of their heads.
“We’ll stay.”
And just like that-
the plan changed.
The island-
the truth-
the possibility of seeing something she wasn’t meant to see-
all of it was pushed away.
Not by chance.
But by design.
Damian didn’t say anything.
But as he sat there, within the safety of his mother’s arms-
his eyes opened slowly.
And his expression shifted.
Not into relief.
Not into happiness.
But into something far quieter.
Far more deliberate.
Because this-
this wasn’t just about protecting Lila.
It was about control.
Timing.
Information.
He wasn’t ready yet.
And neither was she.
Ethan, beside him, exhaled quietly.
“Good,” he whispered, almost to himself.
Because whatever they had seen-
whatever they suspected-
they weren’t ready for it to become real.
Not yet.

Chapter 248
Not like that.
Lila, unaware of the storm quietly forming beneath the surface, simply held her sons and smiled.
For her-
everything was still whole.
Still intact.
Still safe.
But beneath that fragile peace-
Damian was already thinking ahead.
Already watching.
Already waiting.
Because the game-
had already begun.
And unlike the adults-
he wasn’t playing blindly anymore.
