Chapter 251
Chapter 251
Simon entered Lila’s office without knocking.
Not out of disrespect-but because formality had long since been discarded between them. In the Blackthorne, only a handful of people were permitted that level of access.
Simon was one of them.
The door closed quietly behind him as he stepped inside, a thick stack of legal documents tucked under his arm. The faint rustle of paper was the only sound that accompanied his entrance.
Lila didn’t look up.
She sat behind her desk, illuminated by the warm glow of a single lamp, its light casting long shadows across the polished surface. Papers were spread neatly before her, each page marked, annotated, understood.
Working.
Still working.
Simon paused for a moment, observing.
It had been a month.
A long, relentless month.
The tax evasion case had not just been an inconvenience-it had been a direct challenge. A calculated move by unseen hands who believed they had found a weakness.
They had miscalculated.
Badly.
Because Lila Blackthorne, before she was anything else, had been an accountant.
And not just any accountant.
Numbers, structures, loopholes-these were her weapons long before power and influence came into play. Where others saw complexity, she saw patterns. Where others hesitated, she moved with certainty.
The case had never stood a chance.
Still, it had required her attention.
Her presence.
Her time.
And Lila did not give those freely.
Simon glanced at his watch.
7:08 PM.
Too late.
Far too late.
“It’s past seven,” he finally said.
Lila didn’t stop writing.
“Mm.”
A brief pause.
“I asked Bryan to get takeout,” she replied casually. “He’ll be back soon.”
Her pen continued moving.
“Stay,” she added. “Let’s discuss this.”
Simon exhaled quietly and walked further into the room. He placed the documents on her desk with care

before moving toward the couch.
He sat.
Waited.
Watched.
Lila finished the line she was writing before finally setting her pen down. Only then did she look up.
And smile.
“The kids are at the doctor’s place,” she said.
It wasn’t relevant to the documents.
Which meant-
It was intentional.
Simon frowned slightly.
“Why?”
Lila leaned back in her chair, her fingers loosely interlocking as her expression softened into something almost amused.
“They’re bored at the estate,” she said lightly. “And they refuse to go back to the island.”
Simon raised an eyebrow.
“That doesn’t sound like a real reason.”
Lila’s smile sharpened just a fraction.
“Oh, they have one,” she said. “They claim they feel bad leaving Margaret alone.”
A beat.
Then-
She let out a soft, quiet laugh.
“And yet,” she continued, “they stay at the doctor’s estate… leaving Margaret alone anyway.”
Simon didn’t respond immediately.
Because she was right.
“They’re too busy,” Lila added, her eyes gleaming faintly, “cracking their little brains open to realize their own contradictions.”
Simon leaned back slightly, studying her.
“You don’t sound concerned,” he said.
“I’m not,” Lila replied.
That wasn’t entirely true.
But concern, in Lila’s world, did not manifest as fear.
It manifested as observation.
Calculation.
Preparation.
Her gaze shifted-locking onto Simon.
The shift was immediate.
Sharp.
Intentional.
“Tell me, Simon,” she said softly.

Something in her tone changed.
Subtle.
But unmistakable.
“What is my dear husband doing on the island?”
The room felt colder.
Simon didn’t move.
Didn’t blink.
Because suddenly, this conversation wasn’t casual anymore.
Lila leaned forward slightly, her eyes holding his-dark, unwavering.
“It almost feels,” she continued, “like the boys don’t want me to see their father.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Pressing.
Simon met her gaze.
And for a brief moment-
It felt like staring into something endless.
Something that did not yield.
Something that did not miss.
The abyss.
He held it as long as he could.
Then-
“I don’t know,” he said.
And that, at least, was the truth.
Lila studied him for another moment.
Then-
She leaned back again.
Relaxed.
Just like that.
“It’s okay,” she said lightly. “I don’t intend to break your friendship.”
Simon exhaled, though he hadn’t realized he’d been holding his breath.
That was the thing about Lila.
She didn’t need to push hard.
A single question from her carried more weight than an interrogation from anyone else.
The door opened quietly.
Bryan stepped in, carrying a paper bag and a drink tray. The scent of food followed him in-warm, grounding, almost out of place in the tension that still lingered.
He placed everything neatly on the table.
“Dinner,” he said simply.
Lila nodded.
“Thank you, Bryan.”

Bryan gave a small nod before stepping back, though he didn’t leave immediately. His presence lingered- subtle, watchful.
Simon leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.
“Let’s talk about the case,” he said, shifting the conversation back to safer ground.
Lila gestured for him to continue.
Simon picked up one of the documents from the stack.
“We’re going to win,” he said plainly.
No hesitation.
No uncertainty.
Lila nodded once.
“I know.”
Simon flipped a page.
“The Bureau overreached,” he continued. “They built their case on assumptions-patterns they didn’t fully
understand.”
A faint smile appeared on Lila’s lips.
“They mistook complexity for concealment,” she said.
“Exactly.”
Simon tapped the paper lightly.
“And they underestimated you.”
Lila didn’t respond to that.
Because it wasn’t worth acknowledging.
“They thought they were dealing with a passive structure,” Simon added. “Something they could unravel.”
He looked up.
“They didn’t realize they were stepping into something designed.”
Lila reached for her drink, taking a slow sip.
“They do now,” she said.
Simon nodded.
“Yes,” he said. “They do.”
A pause.
Then his expression shifted slightly.
More serious.
“But that’s the problem.”
Lila set her drink down.
“Go on.”
Simon leaned back slightly, his gaze steady.
“They’ve seen what you can do,” he said. “They’ve seen how you think.”
A beat.
“And now… they’ll adapt.”
The room grew quiet again.
Bryan remained still near the door.

“They’ll keep an eye on us,” Simon continued. “Every transaction. Every movement.”
Lila didn’t look concerned.
If anything-
She looked interested.
“And?” she asked.
Simon held her gaze.
“The next case,” he said slowly, “won’t be something you expect.”
That-
That made her smile.
Not out of arrogance.
But because unpredictability was where she thrived.
“They’ll stop playing to your strengths,” Simon added. “They’ll look for weaknesses.”
Lila tilted her head slightly.
“And what do you think my weakness is, Simon?”
He hesitated.
Not because he didn’t have an answer.
But because saying it out loud…
Was dangerous.
Still-
“You don’t like losing control,” he said.
Silence followed.
Bryan’s eyes flickered briefly toward Lila.
Watching.
Waiting.
Lila’s expression didn’t change.
But something in her eyes did.
Deepened.
Sharpened.
“That’s not a weakness,” she said calmly.
Simon met her gaze.
“It is,” he replied, “If someone knows how to take it from you.”
A long pause.
Then-
Lila smiled again.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
“Then I suppose,” she said softly, “I’ll just have to make sure no one ever does.”
Later that night, after Simon had left and Bryan had cleared the table, Lila remained alone in her office.

The documents sat untouched now.
Because her mind had moved beyond them.
The Bureau.
The case.
Those were surface-level problems.
Manageable.
Predictable.
But underneath-
Other pieces were shifting.
Damian.
Ethan.
Damon.
The island.
The doctor.
Threads.
All connected.
All moving.
And somewhere in that movement-
Something was being built.
Or prepared.
Lila stood slowly, walking toward the window once more.
The estate was quiet.
Still.
But she knew better than to trust stillness.
“Not what I expect…” she murmured.
Her reflection stared back at her in the glass.
Calm.
Composed.
Unshaken.
But her eyes-
Her eyes were alive.
Thinking.
Calculating.
Anticipating.
“Good,” she said softly.
Because if there was one thing Lila Blackthorne understood better than anyone-
It was this:
The most dangerous threats…
Were never the ones you saw coming.
And if someone out there believed they could outmaneuver her-

If they believed they could find the one angle she hadn’t considered-
Then they were already making a mistake.
A fatal one.
Behind her, the office remained silent.
But Lila smiled.
Because whether it was the Bureau…
Or her own sons…
Or even Damon himself-
It didn’t matter.
She would see it.
Understand it..
And when the time came-
She would decide exactly how it ended.
Just as she always did.
