The Wife He Never Meant to Love (Lila and Damon) novel Chapter 258

Chapter 258

Chapter 258

Rose began to disappear.

Not physically-she was still there, still moving through the house, still fulfilling every responsibility she had taken upon herself-but emotionally, she withdrew.

Carefully.

Deliberately.

She stopped lingering in the same room as Damon. If he entered, she found a reason to leave. If he spoke, she answered politely, briefly, and without meeting his eyes for too long. Even her movements changed-quieter, more distant, as if she were trying to erase her own presence from his awareness.

It was the only way she could breathe.

Because the longer she stayed close to him, the more dangerous her feelings became.

And Rose was not foolish.

She knew exactly what this was.

A fleeting illusion.

A weakness born from proximity, from shared silence, from the fragile vulnerability Damon had shown her when he trusted her enough to stay by his side.

It wasn’t real.

It couldn’t be.

So she told herself again and again-

This will pass.

It has to.

And the only way to make it pass… was distance.

There was another reason, too.

Maddy.

Rose had not missed the way Maddy’s gaze followed her now-sharp, cold, suspicious. Every glance felt like a blade pressed lightly against her skin, waiting for the slightest movement to cut deeper.

Avoiding Damon meant easing Maddy.

And if Maddy was at ease…

Then maybe everything would settle.

Maybe the fragile peace in that house would hold just a little longer.

But Damon noticed.

Of course he did.

He noticed everything.

That night, the air was colder than usual.

The waves rolled steadily beneath the dark sky, their rhythm steady but heavy, like something building beneath the surface.

Rose sat alone near the shore, her knees drawn slightly toward her chest as she stared out into the vast,

endless water.

Chapter 258

For the first time that day-

She allowed herself to feel.

To breathe.

To be honest.

Her chest tightened.

Her thoughts wandered.

And for a moment, she let herself admit what she had been trying so hard to deny.

It hurt.

More than she expected.

More than she was prepared for.

“Rose.”

His voice came from behind her.

Low.

Calm.

Unavoidable.

She froze for half a second before turning her head.

Damon stood there.

Watching her.

“Why are you avoiding me?” he asked.

Direct.

No hesitation.

Rose forced a faint smile.

“Mr. Damon,” she said softly, “you should go back inside. You might catch a cold.”

“And you?” he replied immediately.

“I’m fine,” she answered. “No need to worry about me.”

She paused, then added carefully-

“And… if Miss Maddy sees us, she might misunderstand again.”

“She’s asleep,” Damon said flatly.

Before she could respond-

He stepped forward.

And sat beside her.

Close.

Too close.

Dangerously close.

Rose felt it instantly.

The warmth of his body.

The faint scent he carried-clean, subtle, unmistakably him.

It wrapped around her senses before she could stop it.

Her heartbeat quickened.

Unsteady.

Uncontrolled.

And when she turned her head-

Their eyes met.

For a moment, the world seemed to shrink.

To narrow.

To focus only on that single point of connection.

From the house-

Maddy watched.

Her hand gripping the doorframe tightly.

Her breathing shallow.

From where she stood, the angle was deceiving.

Rose leaning slightly toward Damon.

Damon close enough that their faces nearly touched.

It looked-

Intimate.

Too intimate.

As if they were about to kiss.

Something inside Maddy snapped.

“You shameless woman!”

Her voice cut through the night like a blade.

Rose jolted.

Her head turning sharply toward the sound.

And there-

Maddy was already walking toward them.

Fast.

Her grip tight around something heavy.

A hammer.

“Maddy-” Rose began, standing quickly.

But Maddy didn’t stop.

She lunged.

Wild.

Uncontrolled.

“Maddy, calm down!” Rose said urgently, stepping back. “We didn’t do anything!”

Her eyes flicked toward Damon.

Silent plea.

Chapter 258

Help me.

Explain.

Stop this.

But Damon didn’t move.

He remained seated.

Watching.

As if the scene unfolding before him had nothing to do with him.

Rose’s chest tightened.

“Maddy-please-” she tried again.

But Maddy didn’t listen.

Her anger had consumed her entirely.

Finally-

Damon stood.

Slow.

Unhurried.

His gaze settled on Maddy.

“Maddy,” she said, her voice breaking slightly, “tell her-”

But his response wasn’t what she expected.

“Whatever rocks your boat, Maddy.”

Flat.

Detached.

Indifferent.

And then-

He turned.

And walked away.

Not rushing.

Not hesitating.

Making sure-deliberately-that his path was visible.

That it could be seen.

Recorded.

Understood.

“M-Mr. Damon!” Rose called, rushing after him.

She caught his wrist.

Her grip desperate.

“Maddy is pregnant,” she said urgently. “At least explain to her-calm her down!”

Damon stopped.

Slowly.

Then turned.

The sudden movement startled her.

She lost her balance-

And stumbled forward.

Straight into him.

From Maddy’s perspective-

It looked like something else entirely.

Like Rose had thrown herself into Damon’s arms.

Damon didn’t push her away.

Instead, he steadied her.

His hands firm at her shoulders.

His gaze, however-

Shifted.

Past her.

To Maddy.

“It’s okay,” he said calmly.

“She will never hurt you.”

A faint smirk tugged at his lips.

So subtle it was almost invisible.

But it was there.

And then-

He left.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Rose barely had time to process what had just happened-

Before Maddy moved.

The first hit came without warning.

Sharp.

Brutal.

Driving Rose to the ground.

“Maddy-stop-!” she cried, trying to shield herself.

But Maddy didn’t stop.

Didn’t listen.

Didn’t hesitate.

Chapter 258

All the anger.

All the jealousy.

All the pain-

Exploded.

She hit her again.

And again.

And again.

“You think you can take him from me?!” Maddy screamed, her voice breaking. “You think I don’t see what you’ ‘re doing?!”

Rose struggled, her arms raised to protect her face, her body curling inward under the assault.

“I didn’t-!” she tried to say.

But the words never landed.

Time blurred.

Minutes stretched.

Into something longer.

Something unbearable.

Upstairs-

Damon stood by the window.

Watching.

Silent.

Unmoving.

The cries echoed through the night.

Raw.

Broken.

Desperate.

Maddy’s voice rising and falling like a wounded animal.

Rose’s weaker.

Fading.

And Damon-

Did nothing.

Because this-

This was what he wanted.

Chapter 258

The fracture.

The collapse.

The turning of one against the other.

Below, Maddy’s movements slowed.

Her strength draining.

Her breathing ragged.

But her voice-

Still filled with fury.

“You will pay for this…” she whispered hoarsely.

“I swear… you will pay.”

And upstairs-

Damon’s expression remained unreadable.

But in his eyes-

Something dark settled.

Satisfied.

Watching.

Waiting.

The house by the shore-

Once quiet.

Once still.

Was no longer a place of peace.

It had become something else entirely.

A battlefield.

And the war-

Had only just begun.
