The Wife He Never Meant to Love (Lila and Damon) novel Chapter 56

Chapter 56

The expo hall buzzed with life.

Bright lights reflected off polished floors. Executives, investors, and media personnel moved in clusters, all vying for one thing-

Damon Blackthorne’s attention.

Everywhere he stepped, people gravitated toward him. Hands reached out. Smiles stretched too wide. Conversations overlapped in hopes he would choose theirs.

Beside him, Maddy walked confidently, enjoying the way others envied her proximity to him.

Then she saw her.

Across the hall.

Lila.

Maddy’s lips curved slowly into a smirk.

“Damon… it’s Lila, right there,” she said casually, pointing in Lila’s direction as though it were nothing.

Damon’s gaze followed.

And froze.

Lila stood near one of the interactive displays.

Jasper stood beside her.

No-

Too close.

Far too close.

They weren’t just talking. They were leaning into each other, sharing private smiles. Jasper bent slightly toward her, his hand brushing the small of her back as he said something that made Lila laugh softly.

The sound didn’t reach Damon.

But the sight was enough.

His face darkened.

The sharp cut of his jaw became more defined. His eyes lost their warmth, turning cold… territorial.

Possessive.

Chapter 56

Maddy noticed the shift immediately.

And satisfaction bloomed in her chest.

Good.

Let him see it.

“Mr. Blackthorne, this way please – to the Inreger Technology booth,” Bryan said respectfully, stepping forward to guide them through the crowd.

Damon didn’t respond at first.

He was still watching.

Still calculating.

Still burning.

“Mr. Blackthorne?” Bryan prompted gently.

Damon finally moved.

But before stepping away, he spoke in a low, controlled voice.

“Check what my wife is doing here.”

Bryan blinked, surprised by the edge in Damon’s tone, but nodded quickly. “Yes, sir.”

He turned and headed toward Lila.

Maddy stood still for half a second.

My wife.

The words hit harder than she expected.

Her smile faltered.

Since when did he start saying it like that?

Not formally. Not out of obligation.

But like a claim.

Like ownership.

Like warning.

She tried to recall the last time he had used those words so naturally… so instinctively.

She couldn’t. And that unsettled her more than Lila’s laughter ever could.

Across the expo floor, Lila remained unaware.

Unaware of the storm in Damon’s eyes.

Unaware that the space between her and Jasper had just become dangerous territory.

And Damon-

Damon Blackthorne did not share what was his.

Bryan hadn’t even reached them yet.

Damon had seen enough.

Across the expo floor, Lila laughed again at something Jasper whispered to her. His hand rested far too comfortably at her waist now, fingers curved possessively as if he had every right.

He didn’t.

Damon’s patience snapped.

Without a word to Maddy, he changed direction.

People tried to stop him.

“Mr. Blackthorne, just a moment—”

“Sir, we’d love to discuss-”

He ignored them all.

The crowd parted instinctively as he walked-calm, deliberate, dangerous.

Lila sensed the shift before she saw him.

The air changed.

The noise around her dulled.

And then-

Jasper’s hand disappeared from her waist.

Because Damon was suddenly there.

Right there.

Bryan hadn’t even reached them yet.

Damon had seen enough.

Towering.

Silent.

Cold.

“Am I interrupting something?” Damon asked smoothly.

Too smoothly.

Lila’s breath caught. “Damon-”

Jasper straightened, offering a polite smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Mr. Blackthorne. We were just discussing the new AI integration system. Your wife had some interesting insights.”

Your wife.

Damon’s gaze dropped briefly to where Jasper had been standing close.

Too close.

When he looked back up, his expression was calm.

But lethal.

“I’m sure she does,” Damon replied evenly. Then, without looking away from Jasper, he added, “You seem very comfortable.”

The tension thickened instantly.

Jasper held his ground. “We were just talking.”

Damon stepped forward.

One subtle movement.

Enough to erase the space between him and Lila.

His hand slid around her waist-firm, claiming, unmistakable.

Lila stiffened.

Not because she wanted to pull away.

But because she felt it.

The shift.

The message.

Mine.

Damon’s thumb pressed lightly against her side as he spoke again, his tone polite but edged with steel.

“Next time,” he said to Jasper, “maintain a professional distance when you speak to my wife.”

The word landed deliberately.

My wife.

Public.

Clear.

Undeniable.

The surrounding conversations had quieted. A few nearby attendees pretended not to stare.

But Maddy wasn’t finished.

“I only meant,” she continued softly, “that as Mrs. Blackthorne, you represent Blackthorne Holdings. Appearances matter. Investors talk.”

There it was.

Reputation.

Whispers.

Scandal.

The perfect weapon.

For a split second, doubt flickered in Lila’s eyes.

Maddy saw it.

And smiled inside.

Damon noticed too.

His expression shifted instantly.

Cold.

Dangerous.

He removed his hand from Lila’s waist.

Maddy’s heart leapt-thinking she had succeeded.

But instead of stepping away from Lila…

Damon stepped in front of her.

Shielding her.

“If investors have questions,” he said calmly, his voice carrying just enough authority for those nearby to hear, “they can direct them to me.”

Silence rippled.

He looked directly at Maddy now.

“And my wife doesn’t answer to gossip.”

The words sliced clean.

Maddy’s smile wavered-just slightly.

“I was only trying to protect the company’s image,” she said carefully.

Damon’s gaze didn’t soften.

“The company’s image,” he replied evenly, “is not threatened by my wife speaking to someone at a technology expo.”

The message was clear.

Back off.

The surrounding tension grew heavier.

Maddy felt it.

The shift.

The power slipping.

But she recovered quickly.

Of course she did.

She let out a soft laugh. “You’re right. I may have overthought it.”

She turned to Lila.

“My apologies if I sounded concerned. I just wouldn’t want anyone misrepresenting you… or your marriage.”

The final words were deliberate.

A reminder.

A hint.

A suggestion that things were not as solid as they looked.

Then she stepped back gracefully.

“I’ll let you both talk. Damon, the investors won’t wait long.”

And with that, she walked away.

Calm.

Composed.

But already planning her next move.

Behind her, the silence between Damon and Lila stretched.

Because Maddy hadn’t attacked directly.

She had done something worse.

She had planted doubt.

And doubt-

Was far more destructive than jealousy.
