The Wife He Never Meant to Love (Lila and Damon) novel Chapter 63

Chapter 63

Chapter 63

Damon refused to sign.

Not once.

Not twice.

Not after arguments, tears, silence, or shattered glass.

The message was clear-

He would not let her go.

So Lila made one final decision.

If Damon wouldn’t listen to her….

:

Maybe he would listen to the woman carrying his child.

The penthouse was exactly how she imagined it-bright, guarded, carefully secured.

When Maddy opened the door, surprise flashed across her face.

“Lila?”

“I’m not here to fight,” Lila said immediately. “I just need to talk.”

Maddy hesitated, then stepped aside.

The air inside was warm. Domestic. Soft.

Too soft.

Lila stood in the center of the living room, hands clasped tightly together to keep them from shaking.

“I want a divorce,” she said gently. “He refuses to sign. Maybe… if you talk to him-”

Maddy’s expression changed.

Not confusion.

Not sympathy.

But something darker.

“You came here,” Maddy said slowly, “to tell me he won’t let you go?”

“No,” Lila shook her head quickly. “That’s not what I meant-”

“It sounds like that,” Maddy’s voice trembled. “It sounds like you’re saying he still wants you.”

“I’m not!” Lila insisted. “I don’t want him-”

“Oh, but he wants you?” Maddy’s eyes reddened. “That’s what you’re implying, isn’t it?”

Lila realized too late how it sounded.

In Maddy’s ears, it wasn’t a plea for help.

It was a declaration.

A provocation.

A reminder.

“He refuses to divorce me,” Lila said carefully. “That’s all I’m saying.”

Maddy let out a broken laugh.

“You’re mocking me.”

“No-”

Before Lila could finish-

A sharp slap echoed through the penthouse.

Her head snapped to the side.

The sting bloomed across her cheek.

Maddy’s hand trembled in the air between them.

“You think you’ve won?” Maddy cried hysterically. “You think because he won’t divorce you that you still matter more?”

“Maddy, calm down-”

“I’m the one carrying his child!” she screamed.

Her breathing turned uneven.

Rapid.

Panicked.

She pressed a hand to her stomach.

“I-I can’t-”

Her knees buckled.

Lila’s anger vanished instantly.

“Maddy!”

Security rushed in. Voices overlapped. Someone called an ambulance.

Everything blurred into sirens.

At the hospital, chaos unfolded quickly.

Doctors surrounded Maddy. Nurses moved efficiently. Questions flew.

Lila stood near the wall, frozen.

Then Damon arrived.

He rushed past everyone-

Straight to Maddy.

“Is she okay?” His voice carried urgency Lila had never heard directed at her.

Doctors reassured him as they wheeled Maddy away for monitoring.

Only then did he turn.

His eyes found Lila.

Cold.

Controlled.

Disappointed.

“Really, Lila?” he said sharply. “You know Maddy is pregnant.”

His voice rose.

“This is our problem. You shouldn’t have involved her.”

The words hit harder than the slap.

Our problem.

He didn’t ask what happened.

Didn’t ask why she went there.

Didn’t ask if she was okay.

He didn’t even glance at the faint redness still visible on her cheek.

Lila stared at him, stunned.

“You didn’t even ask my side,” she whispered.

Damon exhaled impatiently, running a hand through his hair. “This isn’t the time.”

Not the time.

Not the place.

Not important.

Lila felt something inside her finally, quietly collapse.

Without another word, she turned and walked away.

“Lila,” Damon called after her.

She didn’t stop.

“Lila!”

His footsteps echoed briefly behind her.

But she kept walking.

Through the hallway.

Into the elevator.

Across the hospital lobby.

She did not look back.

Not this time.

Lila didn’t go home. She didn’t return to Calm Villa.

If Damon refused to sign the divorce-and if Maddy thought she was there to provoke her-then she would remove herself entirely. From their world. From their city. From every place that carried their names and their history.

She drove straight to the airport. The road stretched endlessly before her, but she didn’t look back.

By noon, she landed in South City. The air was warmer here, lighter, almost unfamiliar-but it felt good to breathe it.

Her first stop was Integer Technology, her brother’s company. She already had a small office there, a space reserved for her in case she ever needed it. Walking through the doors felt grounding. This office was hers-

quiet, practical, and completely under her control.

Once settled, she called her university. “I’d like to request a transfer to another city,” she said calmly, keeping her voice steady.

There was a pause, then the administrator replied, “I’ll connect you to your academic advisor.”

After explaining her situation, her professor didn’t hesitate. “With your grades and dedication, you should transfer to the best university in South City. It’s demanding, but it will suit your ambitions—and I recommend it.”

Lila agreed immediately. If she was starting over, she would do it properly.

By late afternoon, she was searching for apartments. Not luxurious penthouses. Not villas. Something quiet, simple, and safe-suburban, but close enough to the city to attend classes.

She found one she liked-a modest two-bedroom with a small balcony and sunlight spilling through the windows. She signed the lease the next morning. With her savings, she would survive, and she didn’t need anyone else to take care of her.

That evening, standing in the middle of her new apartment surrounded by moving boxes, Lila exhaled. It wasn’t glamorous. It wasn’t extravagant. But it was hers.

She would finish her master’s degree. She would build her career. Her life. And if Damon Blackthorne refused to let go, she would learn to walk away anyway.

For the first time in weeks, Lila slept peacefully, without waiting for a call, without hoping, without fear. South City didn’t know her story—and that was exactly how she wanted it.

Lila arrived at the university the next morning, clutching her recommendation letter carefully.

The admissions office barely glanced at it before processing her immediately. “You’re accepted,” the administrator said with a polite smile. “You can attend classes whenever you like.”

A thrill of relief ran through her. This was real. No contracts, no hidden agendas, no manipulations—just her and her education.

She requested the schedule for working professionals. Her classes were set for 7p.m. to 9p.m. on weekdays, with whole-day sessions reserved for weekends. It gave her mornings and afternoons for work-and, more importantly, for herself.

Later that week, her brother Mark came by her new apartment. The moment he stepped inside, he didn’t even sit down.

“That dog already has a woman pregnant and refuses to sign the divorce?” he spat, pacing the small living room. His voice carried pure disgust.

Lila didn’t answer immediately. She unpacked a box of textbooks, letting him vent.

“If you want,” Mark continued, softer but firm, “we can stop our cooperation with Blackthorne Industries entirely. Make him feel it where it counts.”

Lila looked up, eyes sharp. “Mark, you shouldn’t mix business and personal,” she reminded him.

He stopped pacing and studied her. “Easy for you to say. You’re the one he’s tormenting.”

“I know,” she replied calmly, “but if we mix business and personal, that’s exactly what he wants. Control. Chaos. Power plays. We don’t give him the satisfaction.”

Mark shook his head, frustration still visible. “Disgusting man. I swear…’

دو

Lila smiled faintly. “I’ll handle him in my own way. I don’t need revenge. Just freedom.”

Mark studied her, then exhaled. “Alright. Just… promise me you won’t let him drag you down.”

“I won’t,” she said firmly, stacking her books neatly.

For the first time in weeks, Mark left without leaving tension in her apartment. Lila leaned against the wall, finally allowing herself a moment of calm.

She had work, she had school, she had her own life.

And for the first time, she could feel it-control was slowly returning to her.
