The Wife He Never Meant to Love (Lila and Damon) novel Chapter 83

Chapter 83

Chapter 83

Jasper stepped forward, his expression calm but unreadable.

“If you want,” he said quietly, “I can help you with the divorce.”

Lila looked at him for a moment. Out of everyone, she never expected Jasper to be the one offering help

“Jas,” she finally said, her voice steady despite the storm inside her chest, “I won’t decline that help.”

The lawyer Jasper recommended was someone powerful-one of the Lee family’s biggest rivals. When Margaret heard about it, even she couldn’t hide her surprise that Lila knew such a person.

A few days later, Margaret came to the villa.

Lila was sitting in the living room when the older woman arrived. The air between them felt heavy.

“Dear,” Margaret said slowly, her sharp eyes studying Lila carefully, “are you sure about this?”

Lila lowered her head, her fingers tightening around the book she was holding.

“I’m sorry, Mother,” she said quietly. “But I have to do this.”

Margaret remained silent for a long moment before letting out a soft sigh.

“I guess you’re willing to sacrifice Damon’s life,” she said bluntly.

Lila’s head snapped up, but Margaret continued before she could respond.

“And since you’re already sure about it…” Margaret added, standing up and fixing her coat, “prepare yourself.”

She paused at the door, her gaze turning colder.

“Take care, Lila. And watch your back.”

Then she left.

The first trial came faster than Lila expected.

Inside the courtroom, the tension was thick enough to suffocate anyone. But when the evidence was presented-the proof Lila had kept and the photos that had mysteriously been sent to her—the result shocked everyone.

The first ruling was in Lila’s favor.

When Lila walked out of the courthouse, the bright sunlight felt almost blinding.

Her phone suddenly rang.

Damon.

Her fingers hesitated for a second before she answered.

“Hello?”

For a moment, there was only silence on the other side.

Then Damon’s low voice spoke.

“Be careful. I ila.”

Her brows furrowed.

“Jasper is not the man you think he is.”

Before she could respond, the call ended.

“Hello? Damon?”

The line was already dead.

Lila slowly lowered her phone, staring at the black screen.

Her heart felt strangely unsettled.

Why would Damon say something like that?

After a moment, she shook her head, trying to push the thought away.

Maybe Damon was just caught off guard. After all, he probably never expected that someone like Jasper would step in and bring a lawyer strong enough to face them head-on.

Still…

Margaret’s words echoed in her mind.

Watch your back.

Damon stood in the middle of Margaret’s study, his fists clenched tightly at his sides.

“Mother,” he said through gritted teeth, “I can’t let her walk away.”

Margaret slowly looked up from the documents on her desk. Her sharp eyes studied her son carefully, as if measuring the weight of his desperation.

For Damon Blackthorne-a man known for his cold composure-to beg was something she had never seen before.

Margaret stood and walked toward him. She gently tapped his shoulder, her expression unreadable.

“So,” she murmured, “you finally understand what you’re about to lose.”

Damon remained silent, but the tension in his jaw answered her clearly.

After a moment, Margaret sighed.

“Fine.” she said calmly. “I’ll handle it.”

A few days later, the court suddenly announced that the trial had been rescheduled and postponed.

The news spread quickly.

Far away from the city, Jasper was already making his move.

He had taken Lila out of Belair City, driving for hours until the towering buildings disappeared and unfamiliar streets replaced them.

Their destination was Wago City.

A place infamous for its lawless reputation-where illegal activities were as common as breathing and the authorities rarely interfered.

The car finally stopped in front of a quiet apartment building tucked between old warehouses.

Lila stepped out, glancing around uneasily.

“This is the best option, Lila,” Jasper said calmly. “We can’t force the court. It seems Damon has already started playing his dirty tricks.”

He walked toward the window of the small apartment and pushed it open, letting the cool air drift inside.

The distant noise of motorcycles and shouting echoed through the streets below.

“I’ll go to the market to buy what you need,” Jasper continued, turning back to her with a soft smile.

Then he stepped closer and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

“You’re safe here,” he said gently.

“Damon can’t find you in this place.”

Lila nodded slowly, though a strange uneasiness settled in her chest.

Jasper gave her one last smile before heading toward the door.

“I won’t be long.”

The door closed behind him with a soft click.

The room suddenly felt too quiet.

Outside, the distant noise of Wago City continued-rough, chaotic, and unfamiliar.

Chapter 83

Lila walked toward the window and looked down at the streets below.

She didn’t notice the black SUV parked across the road.

Inside the vehicle, a man lowered his binoculars.

“Target confirmed.” he muttered into his phone.

A deep voice answered on the other end.

“Keep watching.”

The man nodded.

“Yes, Mr. Blackthorne.”

Lila had fallen into a deep sleep.

The exhaustion from the past few days had finally caught up with her. The small apartment in Wago City was quiet, the faint sound of distant traffic humming through the night.

The front door slowly opened.

Jasper stepped inside carrying a paper bag from the market.

He barely had time to close the door before a cold voice cut through the silence.

“It seems you have a habit of taking things that aren’t yours, boy.”

Jasper froze.

His eyes slowly moved toward the living room.

A man was sitting comfortably on the couch, one leg crossed over the other as if he owned the place.

Several men stood behind him like shadows.

When Jasper saw who it was, the faint smile on his face slowly disappeared.

“Mr. Richard Blackthorne,” Jasper said calmly.

“For someone like you-who had everything you ever wanted handed to you,” Jasper continued, his eyes hardening, “you can’t possibly understand.”

Before he could say another word-

THUD.

One of the men suddenly kicked Jasper hard in the stomach.

Jasper collapsed to the floor with a groan.

Another punch followed.

And another.

He curled on the ground, covering his head as the blows kept coming.

The noise woke Lila.

Her eyes shot open.

“Jasper…?”

Hearing the commotion, she rushed out of the bedroom.

The sight in front of her made her heart stop.

Jasper was on the floor, being beaten by two men.

“STOP!”

Lila ran forward immediately.

“Please, stop!”

Without hesitation, she threw herself over Jasper’s body, shielding him with her own.

“Please stop!” she cried, her arms wrapped protectively around him.

The men paused.

Lila slowly lifted her tear-filled eyes toward the man sitting on the couch.

“Father…” her voice trembled. “Please… I’m begging you. Stop.”

Richard Blackthorne looked at his daughter-in-daughter with a calm but piercing gaze.

He stood slowly.

“I’m trying to save you, dear,” Richard said coldly.

Lila shook her head desperately.

“No… no, Father.”

She tightened her hold on Jasper.

“I came with Jasper on my own,” she said firmly, despite the tears running down her face.

“I chose to come here.”

Richard’s expression darkened slightly.

Jasper looked up at him from the floor, blood at the corner of his mouth-but there was still a strange, defiant

smile on his face.

“Well,” Richard said quietly.

“That makes things… even more interesting.”

Rough hands suddenly grabbed Lila’s arms.

“Let go of me!” she cried out.

Before she could react, one of Richard’s men dragged her away from Jasper.

“Jasper!” she shouted, trying to reach him.

But another man blocked her path.

Within seconds, they had pulled her out of the apartment and down the dim hallway.

The cold night air hit her face as the door of a black SUV was opened.

“Get in.”

They pushed her inside.

The door slammed shut.

Lila found herself seated beside Richard in the back seat as the vehicle began to move through the dark streets of Wago City.

Her hands trembled slightly, but her eyes remained determined.

“Father,” she said firmly, turning to him, “my decision is final.”

Richard remained silent.

“I’m divorcing Damon,” Lila continued with full conviction.

The car remained quiet for a long moment.

Finally, Richard let out a slow breath.

“I won’t force you to come with me,” he said calmly.

Lila looked at him, surprised.

“It isn’t my job anymore,” Richard continued, staring out the window. “That responsibility belongs to Damon now. It’s his duty to bring you back and make sure you’re safe.”

“And take this

Richard handed her a small phone.

“Don’t let that Jasper know you have it,” he said quietly.

Lila stared at the phone.

There’s a number saved in the phonebook.”

Richard’s voice became colder.

“If things become ugly… that number will be your rescue.”

Lila slowly tightened her grip on the items.

“Why are you saying this?” she asked softly.

Richard turned his head and looked directly at her.

For the first time that night, there was something almost like concern in his eyes.

“Because,” he said slowly, “the man you’re protecting tonight may be far more dangerous than the one you re trying to escape from.”

Outside, the SUV continued driving through the dark streets of Wago City.

And far behind them-

In the small apartment-

Jasper slowly wiped the blood from his lip

Then he smiled.

A dark, knowing smile.

“Richard Blackthorne…” he murmured.
