The meeting ended earlier than expected.
By the time I returned to my office, Tessa was waiting beside my desk with my updated schedule.
“Your two o’clock meeting has been moved to tomorrow,” she informed me. “The overseas investors have confirmed the call for four, and Mr. Bennett would like to discuss the revised acquisition proposal before the end of the day.”
“Have him send the documents to my email. I’ll review them tonight.”
Tessa glanced at her tablet. “You also have dinner with the Singapore delegation at seven.”
I thought about it for a moment.
“Ask Whitmore to attend in my place,” I said.
She looked up. “You want to cancel?”
“Delegate it.” I corrected.
“All right.” She made a note. “Is there anything else you’d like me to move?”
“No. That’s enough.”
Tessa studied me for a moment before asking, “Are you going home?”
“Yes.”
She didn’t comment, but I caught the faintest hint of amusement in her expression.
“What?”
“Nothing, sir.”
“Then why are you smiling?”
“I’m not smiling,” she said quickly.
“You’ve worked for me long enough to know that I don’t appreciate being lied to.”
Her mouth twitched again.
“I was merely wondering whether Mrs. Dhark knows you’re coming home early.”
I stared at her.
Tessa immediately lowered her eyes to the tablet. “Would you like me to call her?”
“No.” I answered quickly. Too quickly.
Then I cleared my throat. “I’ll call her myself.”
“Of course.” She smiled, looking suspiciously pleased with herself.
I ignored it, collected my things, and headed for the door.
I had spent most of the day listening to people discuss Claire as though her life were a public inconvenience. I wanted to see her. I wanted to hear her voice, look at her face, hold her in my arms and remind myself that she was all right.
Perhaps I also wanted to make sure she was eating properly.
She had been nauseated so often lately, and although the doctor had assured us that everything was normal, I couldn’t stop worrying about her.
I knew Claire would accuse me of being overprotective if she heard that thought. She wouldn’t be entirely wrong.
But I was learning to live with that.
By the time we reached the mansion, the afternoon sun had begun to dip toward the horizon. I stepped out of the car, loosened my tie, and turned toward the entrance.
Then I heard another car approaching.
I glanced over my shoulder just as a familiar vehicle pulled up behind us. The driver’s door opened, and Margot Sinclair stepped out.
