I was actually proud that Luna Lydia wasn’t biased towards her son or Sandra and gave equal importance to Connor and I.

Sometimes, I felt she favored me over Sandra. However, I hadn’t really seen Connor bond with his step

mother much.

And after finding out his mom’s condition and the way Alpha Asher said that Connor blamed him for everything, I could understand why.

I was lost in thoughts when Elder Johanson’s words brought me back to the present.

“Maybe we have to revisit the laws and look for something more to support each heir’s claim.”

Something more? I listened intently.

“Back in the old days, succession wasn’t so simple. There were several tests the heir had to pass despite the blood running in his veins.”

Worry gnawed at me. What was Elder Johanson hinting at?

He saw my face and chose not to elaborate.

As per yet another law, only the elder council could decide or even hear about the succession talks. The rest of the pack, including the candidate himself would only hear about it once a decision had been made.

Alpha Asher’s voice stayed mild, but there was steel underneath. “The elders’ wisdom will guide us, of course. We simply want what is best for the future. The law is clear about the fact that the heir must be someone the pack can trust not to endanger alliances or tradition.”

His gaze flicked to me briefly and I quickly looked away.

Thankfully the conversation drifted to another topic however every now and then I heard words like “the future of the pack” and “steady leadership.”

Every careful phrase made my stomach twist, not for myself, but for Connor.

Aaron arrived late, bowing low to the table. “Apologies, Elders. Pack business ran long.”

Johanson’s face lit up. “Aaron, my boy! Come sit here.”

He patted the empty chair beside him like he was summoning a favored grandson.

Aaron sat, and the older man immediately began fussing. “You work too hard. Look at those dark circles. The pack is lucky to have such a dedicated young alpha.”

I glanced toward the doorway for the hundredth time. There was no sign of Connor. My heart sank a little

lower with every passing minute. They were all eating, laughing, discussing succession without him, and it felt wrong in a way I couldn’t name.

Elder Maren finally spoke up, her kind eyes scanning the table. “Has anyone seen Connor this evening?”

I opened my mouth to offer some polite excuse, but the main doors swung open with perfect timing and as if on cue Connor walked in.

The table fell silent so fast you could hear the soft clink of a spoon against porcelain. Some elders looked cautiously pleased while others looked wary.

Elder Johanson’s fork paused halfway to his mouth.

I smiled at Connor before I could stop myself. “Elder Maren was just asking about you.”

Connor’s gaze found mine for a brief, warm second before he turned his full charm on the table.

He moved down the line of elders one by one, greeting them one on one, asking after their health and well being.

He complimented Elder Kosta’s deep green robe saying “It brings out the wisdom in your eyes”, while also asking Elder Maren about her garden.

Elder Voss suddenly coughed beside her and a servant offered chilled water glass but Connor shook his head. “Not this, Elder Voss prefers room-temperature water because cold water is bad for his sinus, if I recall correctly.”

Elder Voss smiled at him and patted his back. I just watched Connor effortlessly charm his way through the lot including those who had been slightly guarded after his last night’s rage.

But tonight he seemed completely normal, and at ease like the Connor they saw last night was a different person entirely.

Elder Johanson pretended to not pay attention to the conversation but his gaze did flick at Connor every few seconds as if waiting for him to bow to him.

However, when Connor finally reached Johanson, he offered only a polite nod-no bow, no extra flourish.

Elder Johanson’s jaw tightened and he stabbed a piece of venison like it had personally offended him.

Connor walked around the table to the empty seat I was standing behind and looked at the frowning elder again.

His voice stayed smooth as silk. “Oh, how could I even forget greeting Elder Johanson?” Connor slapped his own temple lightly and continued.

“He is the eldest and most experienced among us. Men of his stature need special care if we want them with us for many more years.”

His words made Elder johanson look up in confusion.

His smile was unwavering as he clapped his hands once. The pack doctor appeared in the doorway as if summoned by magic.

Confused murmurs rippled around the table as every head turned in that direction as the pack doctor walked inside, bowing to everybody before coming to stand beside us.

Alpha Asher looked from the doctor to Connor.

“What is going on?”

“I heard about Sienna’s mistake from earlier and how she did the grave mistake of serving shellfish on the same table where Elder Johanson was supposed to dine.”

My brows furrowed in confusion as well as I stared at him.

He turned slightly to look at me.

“Sienna, you should be more careful with stuff like that. Do you have any idea how valuable Elder Johanson is to our pack?”

I fumbled. “I didn’t mean to”

He shook his head and then looked at the old man.

“I am sorry for my partner’s grave mistake. I wondered what was the best way to ensure there was no repeat of the earlier incident so I came up with this idea.”

“What idea?” Elder Johanson was now curious.

Connor smiled, calm and deadly. “We’ve been putting off your full health check for far too long. Your well- being is our top priority and yesterday’s incident only highlighted that we should have gotten it done the moment you arrived.”
