I heard the shouting before I even made it through the front door.

Loud, angry voices echoed through the grand entrance hall of the Ashford mansion, followed by the sound of something crashing.

What the hell was going on?

I quickened my pace, pushing through the heavy oak doors, and stopped dead at the scene unfolding before

  1. me.

Sandra was standing in the center of the main hall, her hands gesturing wildly as she screamed at someone I couldn’t quite see yet.

These are supposed to be flowers?she shrieked, her voice pitched high enough to shatter glass. These cheap, tasteless, roadside things? You expect me to decorate with these?

I moved closer and saw the target of her rage. It was a young girl, probably no more than eighteen or nineteen, wearing Marie’s florist shop uniform.

The poor thing looked terrified and was clutching a clipboard to her chest like a shield.

II’m sorry, ma’am,the girl stammered. But these are the flowers that were ordered. It is the same arrangement as every year

I don’t care what was ordered every year!Sandra cut her off, taking a threatening step forward. These are absolute garbage! Do you have any idea whose anniversary this is? This is the Ashford pack’s Alpha and Luna’s anniversary for Goddess sake! We don’t use cheap flowers that look like they were pulled from someone’s backyard!

Miss Sandra, please, if you’d just let me explain a bit..The young girl tried again but Sandra shut her down. Explain what?Sandra’s voice dripped with venom. That you’re incompetent and your boss sent you here with subpar products? Or that you clearly have no idea how to cater to clients of our caliber?

The girl’s eyes were filling with tears, and my hands clenched into fists at my sides.

Ma’am, these are premium roses and lilies, the same quality that we offer to other reputable clients.

Somehow that line enraged Sandra even further.

Are you seriously telling me that you are giving us the same cheap stuff that you give to every other pack?

The girl tried to answer again. No ma’am, you are getting it wrong. This isn’t

But before she could complete her line Sandra stomped her heels to stand directly in front of the girl and shoved the girl hard.

How dare you say that I am wrong?Sandra demanded and made no effort to steady the poor girl who stumbled backward.

My hands shot out but I was a second too late and the girl fell right at my feet with a cry of pain.

Something hot and furious ignited in my chest.

I immediately crouched down, and gently placed my hands on her arms to help her get up.

Are you okay?I asked softly.

The girl looked up at me, and recognition flooded her face with relief instantly.

Miss Miller! Oh, thank the Goddess you’re here. She clutched at my arm. I tried to explain that these are the usual flowers, the ones you order every year as per my boss. I brought the roses, the lilies, and the baby’s breath in the same soft shades that you request from us every year.

I know,I said soothingly, helping her to her feet. You did exactly right.

Usual flowers?Sandra’s laugh was sharp and cruel as she stalked toward us. You call those cheap roadside things flowers?

I turned to face her, keeping my voice level even though I wanted to scream.

past five years, Sandra. These are I’ve been doing the floral arrangements for this party every year for the exactly the soft shades Mrs. Ashford aka the pack’s Luna, loves. I just change the type of flowers every year but keep the shades the same. And might I add, I have been doing this at Aaron’s personal request ever since he first begged me years ago.

Sandra’s perfectly painted lips twisted into a sneer.

No wonder he never gave you any attention if that’s your taste in decoration. Roadside weeds and clearance bin candles. She laughed, the sound grating against my nerves. How pathetic!

I felt heat creep up my neck, and my jaw clenched so hard it hurt.

I had to repeat the words Don’t cause a scene. Don’t give her the satisfactionlike a mantra in my head to keep myself calm.

The arrangements are fine,I said through gritted teeth. Besides, you have no right to hurt anyone. You should apologize to her

Sandra’s eyes widened in disbelief and she was about to open her mouth to spit venom like always but then Aaron’s voice drifted from one of the several hallways inside.

He was approaching us, wearing his usual suit and the tie hanging unevenly from his collar. He never learned

What’s going on here?

Aaron’s voice cut through the tension like a knife.
