Connor stood in the hallway, one hand in his pocket, the other running through his hair in a gesture that almost looked nervous. And he never looked nervous.
He looked up when the door opened, and his eyes went straight to me.
I watched his gaze travel slowly from my face down to the dress, taking in every detail.
His jaw clenched and his eyes darkened.
And I felt heat pool low in my belly at the intensity of his stare.
‘Say something, I wanted to beg. “Tell me how I look. Tell me what we are doing isn’t insane.”
But he just stood there, his gaze roaming over me like he was memorizing every inch.
Finally, he let out a long, slow breath that sounded almost pained.
Then he extended his hand toward me.
“Shall we?” His voice was rough, and deeper than usual.
I placed my hand in his, feeling the warmth of his palm against mine, and nodded.
He slipped his fingers through the gaps in my palm and interlocked our hands tightly, making a pleasant shudder run down my spine.
He led me down the hallway, his thumb tracing small circles on the back of my hand that somehow anchored.
We reached the main staircase that led down to the grand hall, and I could already hear the sounds of the party below.
The clink of glasses and the murmur of dozens of conversations happening at once was accompanied by soft music and occasional laughter.
I hesitated at the top of the stairs.
“What if I trip?” I whispered.
“Then I’ll catch you.”
“What if people stare?”
“They will definitely stare.” He glanced at me, a hint of a smile on his lips. “You’re wearing a dress that looks like it was made for you, and you’re arriving with me. They’re absolutely going to stare.

“That’s not helping.”
“You want me to lie?”
“A little reassurance would be nice!”
He stopped, turning to face me fully.

“Sienna.” His voice was serious now. “You look beautiful. Anyone who stares is doing it because they can’t help it. And anyone who has anything negative to say can fuck off, because you’re here with me, and that’s all that
matters.”
My heart did a complicated flip in my chest and he added. “You want Aaron, right?”
“Yes,” I managed. “Okay, let’s do this.”
We descended the stairs together, and I tried not to think about all the ways this could go wrong.
The grand hall was packed with guests, all dressed in their finest. The chandeliers sparkled overhead, casting golden light across the polished marble floors.
Tables laden with food and drinks lined the walls, and waiters moved smoothly through the crowd with trays of champagne.
It was exactly the kind of elegant, sophisticated event that made me feel like a fraud.
We’d barely made it three steps into the room when I heard the sound of whispers and murmurs followed by several heads turning in our direction.
“Is that Connor Blackwood?”
“I didn’t know he was coming tonight.”
“Who’s that with him?”
“She’s wearing Chanel. Did you see that dress?”
“They look good together, don’t they?”
Some of the ladies actually gasped, their eyes widening as they took in our joined hands and the dress Maria had insisted I wear.
I inched closer to Connor subconsciously, and his grip on my fingers tightened in response.
I held my chin up as he led me near the main entrance where I spotted Aaron and Sandra.
They were positioned like hosts of the evening, clearly waiting to receive the Alpha and Luna when they arrived.
Aaron looked handsome in a dark suit, his hair styled perfectly, his posture straight and confident.

And Sandra, despite the fact that I hated her nerve, looked stunning in a deep purple dress that probably cost more than my car. Her hair was cascading down her back in perfect waves, and her makeup looked flawless.
They looked like the perfect couple, like the ideal future Alpha and Luna.
And seeing them standing there together, looking so right, sent an unexpected pang through my chest.
Before I could analyze my thoughts further, the main doors opened.
The crowd fell silent immediately, all conversations stopping mid–sentence as everyone turned toward the
entrance.
Alpha Asher Ashford walked in first, and even though I’d seen him dozens of times over the years, his presence still commanded attention.
I tore my gaze away from them and stole a glance at Connor and my mind instantly started comparing the father and sons.
Connor was taller than Aaron by at least an inch with broad shoulders that filled out his suit jacket perfectly. His dark hair was combed back, showing off the strong lines of his face.
His jaw was sharp, his cheekbones prominent, and his eyes were an intense dark brown that seemed to see right through me.
He looked like his father.
Alpha Asher was barely home, always in meetings or traveling and even while growing up, I had barely interacted with him a few times.
I’d mostly seen him through formal portraits hanging in the hallways, and candid shots in family albums that Aaron had shown me over the years.
Connor had his eyes and his build too.
But where Aaron’s features were softer, Connor’s were sharper and more attractive, a fact I was surprised to notice.
Aaron looked like the kind of guy you’d bring home to meet your parents.
Connor looked like the kind of guy your parents would warn you about.
And I was very much “Team Warning Sign‘ right now.
I directed my gaze back to the alpha and Luna who had stepped out of the car now.
Alpha Asher was in his late forties, still powerfully built despite his age. He wore a perfectly tailored suit and smiled warmly at Luna Lydia Ashford, Aaron’s mother.
She was elegant and poised like always, her blonde hair styled in an intricate updo, and she wore a champagne–colored gown that made her look radiant.
