“Did we…go overboard?” I asked doubt creeping in.

“Not at all,” Connor assured me as he took a glass of champagne from the waiter and took a swig.
“Better than expected, actually.”
“Sandra’s having a complete meltdown.” I said, staring in the direction they had left.
“I noticed.” Connor swirled the glass in his hand lazily.
“Aaron ran after her. Again.”
“He always does.”
“They’re probably fighting about us right now.”
“Undoubtedly.”
“Does that make me a bad person?” I asked, chewing on my bottom lip. Connor finished the glass and placed it on the nearest table with a soft thud.
“Making him realize what a golddigger and attentionwhore he is running after even if it makes him hurt? Not really”
I felt a smile spread across my face.
“Plus, he came to talk to you enough times even with the dumb chick around her. Did he do that previously?”
“No” I shook my head and Connor shrugged.
“See, it’s fine. The plan is working.”
Connor’s words infused me with some motivation. For the first time in years, Aaron had looked at me and seen me with someone else.
Not just that, he had seen me choose someone else over him, that someone being the guy he had despised all his life.
And he’d been jealous.
I’d seen it in his eyes, in the way his jaw clenched, in how quickly he’d tried to defend Sandra.
“Thank you,” I said to Connor.
He raised an eyebrow. “For what, specifically?”

“For making my night.” I grinned up at him. “This is the best party I’ve been to in years.”
“We haven’t even made it past the entrance yet, Speckles. The party’s just getting started.”
“Still. Thank you.”
His expression softened slightly. “You’re welcome.”
Then he leaned down, his lips brushing against my ear.

“Though I have to ask, are you referring to the act we just put on, or the one back in my room?”
The reminder of his mouth on me and the sounds I’d made hit me like a freight train.
My face went from pleased to mortified in approximately half a second.
I turned beet red, heat flooding from my cheeks all the
way
down to my toes.
“I… we shouldn’t…”
“Shouldn’t what?” His voice was pure sin. “I shouldn’t talk about how you tasted? How you sounded? Or how you said my name when I made you…”
“Stop!” I hissed, slapping his chest lightly. “People can hear you!”
“No one’s close enough,” he said, but he was grinning now. “But I like how flustered you get.”
“I hate you.”
“No, you don’t.”
I tried to glare at him, but the effect was ruined by the smile I couldn’t quite suppress.
“I should go,” I said, trying to sound firm. “Mingle with the other guests. Let you suffer through this party alone.”
“Absolutely not.” His hand found mine, his fingers interlocking with mine in a grip that was firm but gentle. “You’re not leaving me to suffer through small talk with the pack elders by myself.”
“That sounds like a you problem.”
“It’s an us problem now, future Luna.”
The title sent a shiver down my spine.
Goddess, what had I gotten myself into?
Before I could protest further, Connor was already pulling me deeper into the crowd.
We moved through the guests like a unit, Connor’s hand never leaving mine.

People stopped us every few feet and suddenly guests were waiting for their turn to congratulate us.
Business associates of the Alpha’s looked at Connor expectantly, wanting to introduce themselves while friends of the family wanted to express their surprise and delight at our relationship.
Connor handled them all with much more ease and grace than I ever could.
He smiled warmly, shook hands firmly, made polite small talk without seeming bored.
He remembered names I’d never heard before, asked after family members I didn’t know existed, navigated conversations about pack politics and business deals that truly made me stare at him in shock several times.
After he caught me staring for the fifth time, he asked. “Something on my face?”
“How…how do you do this?”
“Do what?” He asked.
“Be all polished and calm and unaffected no matter what happens. How are you…so…
I searched for the right word.
“Devastatingly handsome?” He offered.
“Effortlessly composed is what I was going after” I quipped.
He gave me a small bow. “It takes practice….after years of putting on a mask, you learn to smile even when everything inside you is breaking.”
That line took me by surprise and I wasn’t sure what to say to that so I simply stared and nodded, trying not to look as lost as I felt.
Luckily, I was spared the task of filling in the awkward silence when a voice floated towards us.
“Connor, darling!”
A woman in her fifties approached us, her dress so covered in sequins she practically sparkled.
“Mrs. Graham, Connor greeted her warmly. “It’s wonderful to see you. You look lovely tonight.”
“Oh, stop.” Mrs. Graham giggled and waved her hand dismissively. “You always were such a charmer. Though I must say, I’m disappointed.”
Connor raised an eyebrow. “Disappointed?”
“My daughter was so looking forward to meeting you at next month’s mate ball. She’s been talking about it for weeks.” Mrs. Graham’s eyes slid to me in an assessing way. “But I see you’ve already found someone?
“I have,” Connor said, pulling me closer. “Mrs. Graham, this is Sienna Miller. Sienna, Mrs. Graham is one of our pack’s most generous benefactors. She’s funded the community center’s expansion and the new school library.”

“It’s wonderful to meet you,” I said, extending my hand.
Mrs. Graham took it, not willingly.
