It was not Sandra but his mother.

Luna Lydia held a champagne glass carefully in one hand, and looked at her son with a combination of concern and patience.
I watched, because I couldn’t help it, as Aaron turned to face her.
I couldn’t hear them through the glass and the distance and the general noise of the party.
But I didn’t need to.
His jaw was clenched and his shoulders were rigid.
He said something angrily and Luna Lydia responded with her free hand coming up in a gesture that clearly meant calm down, please.
Aaron’s response was to run a hand through his perfectly styled hair, messing it up slightly, not happy with whatever his mother said.
He was upset about being overlooked tonight by his parents at such an important event, I could tell that much.
Connor and Aaron tolerated each other but Aaron had always been the favored one except tonight.
I watched Luna Lydia try to reason with him, her expression patient and kind, her free hand now resting on his arm.
Aaron shook his head, and I could see from the set of his jaw that he wasn’t hearing whatever she was saying.
He was too inside his own head, too wrapped up in the unfairness of it all.
And Goddess help me, I felt guilty.
Because even though Aaron had been horrible to me in the past few days, even though he’d called me desperate and showed up with Sandra and generally behaved like a complete ass, the sight of him standing there upset and agitated while his mother tried to calm him down made my heart do something stupid and traitorous.
I still loved him despite knowing I had no right to despite having kissed and fucked his annoying half brother. The two things coexisted in my chest like uncomfortable roommates who refused to acknowledge each other. A servant appeared in the doorway of the sitting room and dragged me out of my thoughts as he knocked softly before entering. He said something brief, and Luna Lydia straightened slightly.
Before she left, she turned back to Aaron and placed her hand on his shoulder to give it a gentle squeeze.

Aaron’s rigid shoulders dropped just a fraction and then the servant and his mother walked outside the door, leaving him alone.
He stood there for a moment, his back partially to me, and I watched him pull himself together.
Seeing him so flustered made me feel horribly guilty and I felt the need to go talk to him not because I wanted to explain Connor or defend myself or score any more points in whatever competition we’d found ourselves in but because he looked like he needed someone.
And despite everything, I was still that person for him.
I was still his best friend, even if he’d been treating me like something considerably less than that tonight.
I set my champagne glass down on the nearest table and took a step toward the corridor.
I’d barely made it two steps when the sitting room door opened again.
I expected his mom or even Sandra to show up and half prepared myself to see him hug her lovingly but then someone random stepped inside.
It was a young girl, roughly around age with long blonde hair that had been styled into careful waves. Her dress was a pale blue, and her makeup flawless.
I’d seen her earlier and I vaguely recalled seeing her standing with Mrs. Graham, the same woman who had been quite disappointed to find out that Connor had a girlfriend.
The girl had to be Mrs. Graham’s daughter.
The girl slipped into the sitting room and I was damn sure she would find Aaron standing there and realize her mistake, apologize to him and walk out.
But neither of those things happened.
The party continued around me, oblivious as I stood frozen, watching through the glass panels as the girl approached Aaron.
He turned when she entered and the expression on his face wasn’t surprise or shock. He broke into a lazy smile when she said something, and he stepped toward her.
Aaron’s face transformed almost immediately and the frustration melted into something hungry, and predatory. He pulled her against him, and their mouths crashed together like they’d been starving for it.
Before I could process what was happening, his hands were in her hair and her hands were on his lapels and they were kissing like neither of them thought it was wrong or particularly care about the anniversary party happening thirty feet away.
I stood there completely still because my brain just stopped working for a few seconds.
Aaron was kissing another girl. My best friend who had been furious about me and Connor, broke a door and called me desperate…who had fought with his girlfriend right here in this party, was making out with some other girl.
