We got in the car and he turned the ignition on as my phone buzzed. It was a text from Aaron and Connor noticed his name flash on my screen as well.
1 didn’t bother opening it but then Aaron sent another text.
“You can stay back if you wish” Connor said but I shook my head.
“No, we are leaving…to meet your friend”
I texted Aaron that I was leaving without explaining where or why. He could assume I went home for all I cared.

I was too pissed at him and all that anger was now honing into a sharp point that didn’t want me crumbling in front of Connor either.
I could fake it all without it affecting me. That was what I wanted to prove to myself either way.
Connor pulled the car out of the parking lot and drove without explaining anything, and I didn’t push it because I could see the way his shoulders were tense.
I looked outside the window, not trying to focus on who we were meeting or why he wanted me there.
Maybe he wanted to see how well I could fake it and it was good if he had someone in his life, I could see it for myself and not let my confusion about Aaron turn into something even more chaotic for Connor.
My phone buzzed again but this time it was a text from Jane.
I looked at the text from Jane that read ‘I am starting to believe you are doing more than just talking with Connor at this point.
I quickly shoved the memories of his tongue in my throat back in the garden and placed the phone upside down to hide my screen.
Connor assumed it must be Aaron and mumbled.
“Feels like your acting is way better than you thought if Aaron can’t stop texting you”
“He gets like that at times” I mumbled and Connor only gave a non committal ‘hmm‘ as he pulled the car outside a small shop.
“I’ll be back in a minute” Connor said and was out of the car in seconds. I quickly texted Jane back.
‘Shut up and stop texting me. We will talk later‘
Not even a second later, she replied ‘Ok, miss totally–not–making–out–with–my–childhood–bully”

1 could swear she was chuckling when she typed that but I only typed ‘Later‘ and stepped out of the car.
It was a small family owned bakery and I saw a middle aged woman who must be the owner bent to retrieve a box from one of the glass shelves.
“The usual?” she said.
“Yes, Rosa.” He handed over cash without checking the amount, and she carefully wrapped the box before handing it over to him.
It could only mean that this was a routine, and he did this every year or even more frequently if the shopowner had already been expecting him.
“I put the sugar flowers on.” Rosa said, straightening up. The little purple ones you said she likes.”
A smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes flashed across his face. “Thank you, Rosa.”
“Tell her happy birthday from me.”
“I will.”
I observed this exchange silently and it only made my curiosity even bigger.
Connor placed the cake box on the back seat very carefully, and then went inside to grab a candle as well. I watched him do it and didn’t ask anything, because the careful way he was holding himself together was starting to tell me more than his words would have.
Twenty minutes later the car stopped and I looked through the windshield half expecting to find a giant entrance of some hotel or a rich billionaire daughter’s mansion gates but I was genuinely shocked to see a hospital staring back at me.
It was one of the city’s finest hospitals, with a clean stone exterior, wide windows, soft lighting, and a huge landscaped garden in the front.
Connor sat with his hand on the door handle for a moment without moving, and I sat with him, and neither of us said anything.
‘Connor,” I said quietly.
“It’s fine, let’s go” he said, and got out.
The receptionist smiled when he walked in and reached for visitor badges without being asked, and handed us one each. I noticed her name tag that read Lucy.
“I was wondering if you’d be late this year,” she said, looking at Connor before she gave me an assessing look
I’ve never been late,” Connor said.
“There’s always a first time but I’m glad you made it” and then looked at me with an observant smile “You never brought a friend before”

“I didn’t have one worthy enough” He said automatically and suddenly I felt my chest constrict.
